Harrington Industrial Spur.

Just a taster of my small (8ft x 1.5ft) freelance modern image switching layout built for and exhibited at the Trent Valley show.

The operations are loosely based on the Los Angeles Junction Railway (Another in progress layout put on the back burner). The layout is far from complete, with more details to be added, a decent backscene mounted and all locos and stock to be weathered.

Here are a few shots grabbed this evening of the Warehouse, Team Track and Transload Facility.

More to follow over the coming days/weeks.

Hi Richard, nice to see a layout on here that I actually saw for real first... :D ;)

As I said at Nick's TVNAM Show, this must be one of only a few US outline layouts that has made use of the Peco Code 83 track... and what a difference it makes, too!!

P.S. Got your DVD yet? B)

Thanks for positive comments so far.

Andrew, track plan to follow - eventually.unsure.gif

Jordan, the DVD arrived today, so I sat down after work and watched it - excellent - plenty of switching action.biggrin.gif

No pictures taken today (I was too busy watching a DVD!!rolleyes.gif ), but heres one from yesterday:

I also saw it first at the TVNAM show, and was quite taken with it. Oddly enough, a friend has recently changed the prototype for his layout from Miami to Vernon, CA, and if anyone has a few minutes to spare, i'd highly recommend having a look at the industrial trackage in the area on Google Earth.

I also saw it first at the TVNAM show, ...

Did you chat to the Idiot next door to Harrington Industrial, who was behind a heap of Soo Line stuff? Or had he deserted his post at the time...  B)

He goes by some silly name here, like F-Unitsummat-or-other.....

Here are a couple of ground-level shots from the real LAJ, taken near C Yard.post-8839-127498143184.jpgpost-8839-127498148324.jpg

There's a good forum about the LAJ with lots of photos and news updates at http://westcoastrail...orum.php?id=107

Yes, westcoastrailforum is a good 'un - as well as the LAJ, there's the La Mirada, Hauler etc.

What you will notice is the rapid changeover to olow emissions units. Roll on the Atlas model...

Here are a couple of shots of my 'Mothballed' LAJ layout to wet your appetite. More from Harrington Industrial to follow over the weekend.

You pretty much nailed it - thanks Nick. The sharped eyed amongst you may notice that I did change the track plan slighty after sending my original to Nick - I decided to run the warehouse track on the outside of the building, providing better veiws of the freight cars and I slightly angled the Loco servicing tracks for a more prototypical feel.

The yellow stands are from Central Valley and come in kit form with a choice of target. (6 in a pack).

The red stand is from N. J. Accessories and is somewhat more expensive at £5.40 each! Both types are available from Model Junction and Walthers direct.

post-8839-127531501004.jpgHere is a photo of a prototype for the NJI switchstand, which is a late Star type. With the spur number stenciled on the target, it's a pretty late SP, which are still common on the ex-SP UP, though the newer ergonomic style is going in everywhere. You actually see a lot of ergonomics on the LAJ.

One thing to notice about the SP prototype is that it is installed on only one long switch tie, rather than two as on many model switches. This is easy enough to fix, just cut one of the long switch ties short. I wouldn't be surprised if this went all the way back to E.H.Harriman himself, who was always asking why, if a bolt extended a quarter inch beyond the nut, the bolt couldn't simply be made a quarter inch shorter.

I've been experimenting with very low releif warehouses along the back of the Loco Stabling area. I think the buildings give the area more depth and creates the impression of an Industrial Park - which is what I am tying to create. The buildings will be suitably painted, detailed and weathered.

One of the warehouses (Next to the fuel point) is used by Rail America for material storage and has direct access to the Servicing Area.

After visiting the DEMU Showcase exhibition at Bretby today (Great show by the way), I felt inspired enough to have a play with Harrington Industrial. 2 of the low relief warehouses were sprayed a nice light grey and attatched to the backscene:

Just need to add some stand off details and a little weathering.

Heres one off the latest additions to the rolling stock:

Having done a little research, refers do tend to stay quite clean, but are a great canvas for taggers. One of my purchases from DEMU was a set of Microscale Graffiti decals.diablo_mini.gif

Sorry for the slightly out of focus pictures - I purchased a new Canon G11 camera last weekend - just wish I knew how to use it!!blink.gif scratch_one-s_head_mini.gif
