RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 18, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) Received this week the Leadley Kits APT PoP 1 kit. A vast collection of 3D printed parts all bagged up. The history of the creation of this kit is described in this thread on RMWeb. A very thorough set of illustrated instructions is available as a download on the Leadley Kits website. At over 100 pages I loaded them onto my iPad rather than printing them. I started with PC3, departing from the instruction sequence to ease painting of the base and frames. This would also allow the ballast weights and supports to be pre-assembled and painted before fixing in place. I used cyano glue for the assembly. Plastic Magic and butanone have no effect. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) The PC3 VIP “pod” was assembled as a separate entity for painting and glazing before fixing in place. The frame parts need a little bit of clean up before fixing in place. I smoothed the edges with a needle file and removed plastic stubs and hairs with a craft knife. The upper side and roof framing will be pre-painted and installed after the completed VIP pod and ballast weights have been fitted. Ditto with the walls and roof to the main cabin. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 19, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2020 (edited) Bogies painted and assembled. I opened out the holes in the inside faces of the bogies sides to allow the wheel pinpoints to rotate freely and smoothed out the axle retaining clips in the main bodies with a needle file. I masked the gluing contact faces of the main body and bogie sides before painting to ensure a secure bonded joint. After applying a coat of grey primer, the chassis sides, undersides and floor were brush painted dark grey using Humbrol enamels. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 21, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2020 (edited) VIP seats received today and painted. Based on the seat photo that Paul posted I created the antimacassars on white decal paper and applied them to the seats. The VIP pod was then fixed in place as was the exterior framing. PC3 completed bar buffers and couplings. Cheers Darius Edited April 23, 2023 by Darius43 6 1
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) PC4 largely completed. Just need to add buffers, couplings and decals to both PC3 and PC4. cheesysmith
Buffers? It was not fitted with buffers, instead it had a tightlock coupling that could rotate and had to be marshalled between to test lab coaches IIRC were converted from MK1 coaches.
apt-e
Hi all, Thats correct, only the very early version fitted with sa bogies had buffers. E1 and e1/t version is as How I have designed it. Regards Paul.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 22, 2020 Hi Paul, That must be the version (with buffers) that is in photos so in the recently published “Testing Testing” bookazine that covers railway testing in the UK from 1960 to the present day. Saves me having to scrounge up some buffers from the spares box. Cheers Darius
