That Alaska is the most northern state in the United States.

Oh, and it's also the most western state too.

And before I forget, it's also the most eastern state.

No, parts of Alaska are west of Hawaii. Hawaii does have the most southerly point in the USA, though.

Benjamin Outram's standard gauge for his plateways was 4'2", not very far off 16.5mm in 4mm scale! If only Stephenson had stuck with that gauge all our models would be correct!

He is a somewhat distant ancestor of a friend of mine!

Lie your arm on a flat surface, palm facing up.

Press your thumb together with your little finger and raise your hand up from the table.

If you see a tendon sticking out underneath your skin, that means you have a muscle in your forearm called the palamaris longus.

Around 10 to 15 per cent of people are missing this muscle on one or both of their arms.

But missing the muscle doesn't make the person weaker.

The muscle is a remnant of our ancestors who used forearms for climbing.

The furthest point on the earth's surface from the central point of the planet is not Everest.

You cannot travel east or west, or in fact any direction except due south, from the geographical north pole (due north from the South Pole).  But you can travel to any bearing.

New York is at the same latitude as Madrid.  Washington is south of Gibraltar.

No it isn't.  It is east of both the 180 degree line of longitude and the international date line; in fact, the most westerly point of land in the western hemisphere is in Siberia.

The most westerly point in the western hemisphere that is not in Russia is Wales.

The American Aleutian Islands, which are part of Alaska, extend beyond 180 degrees. So yes, Alaska is the most easterly state in the USA.

The grand shaft in Dover has a unique triple helix staircase. https://doverwesternheights.org/grand-shaft/

And in Graz, there is a Double Spiral Staircase.

I marvel at how the stonemasons of that time were able to design and produce such workmanship with, by today's standards, crude instruments.

Relying on my childhood knowledge for this one, but I refuse to assimilate Google into my brain -

So I think I'm right in saying:

The planet Venus is very much the odd one out in our solar system because:

It's the only planet not named after a male or Roman God. (Greek female)

She spins in the opposite direction to all the other planets.

Her days are longer than her years due to slow rotation on axis compared to solar orbit.

Chronos is Old Father Time and is named after the original name of Saturn.

I'll go along with that, but Gaia, the Classical Greek goddess representing the concept of the Earth, was female, and AFAIK every culture has a concept of 'Mother' Earth.

You're just getting people to try, aren't you? :D

Oh damn...  :fool:

Anyway never mind Edinburgh being further west than Bristol, which should be obvious to anyone who can read a map - at Longitude 3.1883°W Edinburgh is actually a teeny bit further west that Cardiff (3.1791°W). Now that's a remarkable fact!! :blum:
