Edinburgh Waverley Station, 1880s - 1930s

Hello, my name is James and I've been really getting in to the hobby properly this past year. I've spent a long time making small dioramas and researching constantly, and for a while now I've known when and where I want to model. The where portion is clear in the title, but the when of it may leave you thinking it is very broad. I want to essentially be able to model a NBR scene with N15s and D30s and J36s, and also an LNER scene with A4s pulling the Coronation and A1/3s pulling the Flying Scotsman, and of course the P2s (today when Lord President was announced I was very happy- it'd been on my wishlist for ages!

The progress on this will not be fast , but I thought I might as well do it now to get everything together. I'm also setting up a topic for my other idea which is Manuel junction : the link will appear here when I set it up

The overall plan is to firstly focus on the west portion, like the other popular layout on this site, but expand it further when my first bit is complete. Bear in mind that could be years :). This first section will have the baseboard space of a standard B&Q 2.2m x 1.1 plywood sheet cut into 2 squares which can be stored on top of each other in this handy corner I have in a room in my house. It will hopefully span from the art gallery to where the canopy closes up after the two ramps going down into the station stop. I'd like to incorporate the Faller Road System slightly, and have room for a portion of the goods yard (I may have to have an extra section at the front) . First thing first is of course the track plan. I've found numerous examples from the time but I'm not sure how I'd be able to blow these up.

And so a new thread is born! I look forward to any comments on what a bad idea this is or something else along those lines :laugh_mini:

Good luck.  Don’t worry about how long it will. I have been working on my current project for years already and there is still many years of work in front of me.

Very wise words that I'll be sure to heed, even if mine doesn't involve Rustons being hoisted apart and being put back on wheels like yours!

I thought I was biting off a lot with GQS. This will be a monumental build.

That means so much coming from the architect of GQS, and yes Hornby have been quite generous to me this year with their A3s and P2s and NBR coaches, however for my LNER 4/6 wheelers they'll be coming from Hattons in the proper pre-war brown, and I don't like what Hornby have done stealing Hattons' market, so if they were to decide to produce NBR stock, I'd place an order there without hesitancy!

On another note, I have two questions:

1) How would I go about printing off a track plan from NLS to the right scale?

2) Apart from the coronations, does anyone know of  A1/3/4 names that would pop up around 64A/B, apart from the obvious coronations? Are there any RTR for now?

Thanks for the warm reception so far,

James.

So, it's been a while, so what have I been up to?

Not much, honestly, progress has been very slow. However, I have acquired the two 1.1 x 1.2m plywood for the west side of the station, and have been collecting up the sparse plans I can. The best track plan I can find is this one,

1864603062_edinburghwavplan.jpeg.a4470b2c5f1c6a3434f02d99ad38d1d6.jpegIt's doesn't have the sharpest lines, and may be in the wrong language, yet opposed to my other alternative, it includes the tracks all the way to the tunnels, and the goods yard is included, for way down the line when it comes. Speaking of which, I have not found one picture of the goods yard yet, so any pictures of any of the station would be helpful!

One of the main issues is lack of a scale. The main solution I've found is to buy a digital copy of the roof plans with such scale from Network Rail, which will set me back £15. Even then, this less accurate plan may be hard to get a direct reference to determine an exact length.

Can anyone advise?

James
