Steamport Southport
Varnish. Should be in the instructions which ones to use. But there is a good guide on their website. https://www.fox-transfers.co.uk/user-guides I tend to use Humbrol Clear now, but others will have their own recommendations. This is the Gloss version. But have a look at the video to see how it works. Also available in satin and matt. May be cheaper elsewhere. https://www.humbrol.com/uk-en/humbrol-gloss-clear-125ml-bottle.html Jason

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2021 For best results the decals should be applied to a glossy surface/paint finish so that “slivering” of the decal does not occur. A matt finished surface is not smooth and flat (on a microscopic level) and it is this that scatters light hitting it and gives the matt effect. The small air pockets trapped between the decal and the “rough” matt surface are what causes the slivering or shiny appearance to occur. This doesn’t happen with a gloss surface. I have obtained good results with decals on matt paint finishes by first “glossing” the surface to receive the decal with an acrylic varnish called “Klear” - a liquid floor polish called “Pledge” in the UK. One this coat has dried, the decal can be applied and further coats of the varnish brushed onto the decal to seal it in. After all has dried, a matt varnish can be applied to recreate the matt finish - I use army painter spray on anti-shine varnish but other products are available. Steamport Southport
That Humbrol Clear is a copy of the Klear/Pledge. Maybe not as useful if you use large amounts of it as it's expensive compared to Klear which some people buy by the litre. They made it because plastic kit modellers asked for it. Seems fine to me. Don't think of the varnish as being like you use on wooden furniture to give it a shine. It's just a thin transparent layer, it can be gloss, satin or matt.
