Little things - for the layout outside the railway fence

My elder daughter, now grown-up, swears that, when she was small, I used to “Drag us to fields in the middle of nowhere, and point at bumps and clumps - and that was a day out!”. What she means is that I’ve always been interested in history, and the faint traces it leaves in the landscape.

I believe Ivor Cutler had an upbringing like that,

Somehow it is never as simple as it was painted at school. I do know though that terminal moraine sometimes shows up as odd small hills apparently at random at the end of a U-shaped valley, and they sometimes create lakes behind them.

But rather a large feature to include on most model railways. Probably not to be classified as a "little thing", though that doesn't mean we shouldn't discuss it here as it affects the landscape we are trying to represent.

I wouldn't want to bore you all to death with a lecturette on the finer points of corrasion. :D

That's all right. I get that sort of thing from my elder son. Not all moraines are terminal. Glacier retreat is his specialist - and topical - subject.

The Glais Moraine, near Skewen, is roughly parallel to the (never-completed) Felin Fran- Brynamman line, and could easily be mistaken for an embankment.

You want a Glacial erratic? Here is one, the Mottee Stone near Avoca, Co Wicklow:

It should be small enough to fit most layouts.

At the rear of what is a pretty enormous viaduct, is this remnant of a small bridge, part of the road that was rerouted lower down the valley when the viaduct was built.

Which means that the bridge hasn't been used since sometime around 1870.

I like the porches. Rather plain terraced houses in our street often have rather nice porches but I am a bit nervous about photographing them.

Anyway, to this week's post.

A few not very useful little things today.

First a road drain

And I wouldn’t recommend you to use this stile which seems to lead straight into a thicket. Though this could be useful at the rear of a layout.

This bus stop has not seen a bus for a long time. When we moved here eight years ago I asked locals and no-one could tell me when the route stopped running.

I hope all the drivers spot the 30 mph sign as they pass. The photo was taken a couple of weeks ago and it is even less visible now.

Finally, not useless. A rather unusual manhole cover, which is just a few feet from that drain. Not sure why it is yellow.

Still thinking of a theme for next week. It may be a random selection.

I presume the yellow cover is a fire hydrant, weren't they all yellow at one time, or was it just the wall mounted sign nearby?

Lowgill Viaduct, on the LNWR Low Gill - Ingleton line. The photo is take from the road bridge that was, I believe, built at the same time as the viaduct (1859, by Locke & Errington) to replace the old pack horse bridge, the road being displaced by the railway and straightened out in the process.

Thought I would show a few examples of Neolithic standing stones, of which there are quite a few round these parts and most of which are small enough to appear on a layout.

The Hoar stone at Enstone (remains of a burial chamber in a barrow):

This is the Hawk Stone at Dean:

Lyneham barrow:

One on the village street at Taston:

And finally, some on a rather larger scale at Avebury:

This one, known as the Spinning stone is on the edge of a Leicestershire village.

There's a round one in the centre of the village part under the wall of a c17th building and another equidistant outside the village. Nobody has been able to say for certain what they are.

When you are part way through scratch building a house and you run out of embossed stone sheet.
