cypherman
Hi all, Can any one tell me did ang of the Southern N15 King Arthur class engines ever run in lined black while in BR livery. Thanks
sandra
As far as I’m aware the King Arthurs were only ever painted in lined green by BR. Upon nationalisation some already bore wartime plain black livery and some Southern malachite green. No doubt they ran in these liveries until painted in lined green by BR. The lined black livery was for mixed traffic locos and the King Arthurs were passenger engines.
cypherman
Hi Sandra, Thanks for the info. Then my engine will remain in unlined wartime black, just prior to being repainted in BR green. But it does mean I am going to have to remove the later BR emblems for the earlier cycling lion ones.
Steamport Southport
I'm afraid not. I think where confusion comes in is that the Schools were painted lined black, before later being green. Prior to the adoption of BR Green they were being painted Malachite with either no logo or BRITISH RAILWAYS in Sunshine or Gill Sans lettering. I don't think a black one would have received a crest, only BR Green ones. Also very few of them received the later crest, mostly the NB built ones. Are there any you are looking for in particular? As I've got this book to hand and has all the liveries in it including dates. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maunsell-4-6-0-Arthur-Locomotives-Detail/dp/0711030863 Jason
cypherman
Hi Jason, It has been pointed out to me that the engine I have done is numbered as The Green King, Which is an S15 and not an N15. So looks like I have made a bit of booboo. Not that there is much of an external difference between to 2 classes other than the wheel sizes. So unless the S15's received a different paint scheme my question is now a moot point. But thanks for the offer.
