I'm not sure of the exact details but I seem to recall something along the lines of Brush builds originally having a single overhead live wire sign below the headcode panel with Crewe builds having one either side.

Also the Brush locos having 2 small reinforcement plates above the draw book, Crewe locos a single long one.

The tail lights open upwards on a Crewe build Brush open to the side. The horn grill on a Crewe one is a lot flatter than its Brush counterpart. And if you look at the top of the cab between the windows a Crewe one has "eye brows " over each window whereas a Brush one has continuous "eyebrow".
