I can only echo the sentiment of the previous posts and how sorry I am to hear of EE's closure. I have run my own business for 25 years (not model railway related) and can attest to the incredible amount of hard work and heartache that goes into such endeavours, none of which shows up directly on the balance sheet. It can't have been an easy decision by any means but full credit for not "burying your head in the sand" and letting things get worse, alot do. I'm not sure of the exact details but I seem to recall something along the lines of Brush builds originally having a single overhead live wire sign below the headcode panel with Crewe builds having one either side. Also the Brush locos having 2 small reinforcement plates above the draw book, Crewe locos a single long one.

Pretty sure it's Sherwood Green as used on green class 47's centre banding. In which case Railmatch 301 is the required paint although personally I have always used Phoenix -Precision P136 as it appears nearer to the prototype to me.

Great stuff David. You are couple of miles out with the location of J7177 & J7178, which were taken where Hambridge Road, just outside the Warwickshire village of Bishops Itchington, crosses over the GWR line between Leamington Spa and Banbury. J7176 will I am sure be taken at Greaves Siding which served Blue Circle's Harbury cement works, the silo's of which can just be seen in the top left of J7178. Southam Road and Harbury station was located another mile or so beyond the cement works near the hamlet of Deppers Bridge. As a lad I spent many happy an hour with my Dad at these places taking photos not dissimilar to yours. Thanks for sharing all these images and keep up the good work, Ken

Another excellent volume in the "Looking Back At" series. Plenty of images from the pre-tops BR Blue era, a particular favorite of mine. I have only seen, at most, a handfull of the images before and can thoroughly recommend this book to any prospective buyer. Bring on "Looking back at the Peaks"

For those who are willing to tackle the running problems with some examples of 40 141 I hope this update may help. Given the unlikely chances of receiving a replacement loco I have had a bash at carrying out the mods recommended by Bachmann and previous posters. To recap I started out with an example that would illuminate all the lights but would not go without a substantial push. At that point I must admit I was convinced the motor was defective. However removed the bogies, pulled out the wheelsets and cleaned the bearing/axles. There is indeed a fine build up of dark grease on the faces. On reassembly nipped up the bogie retaining screws then backed them off a quarter turn. Result: 100% reliable starting, albeit a little sudden together with the lights going of on points now and then. Encouraged by this I took the loco back to pieces again and added extra pickups from 0.45mm handrail wire. As shown in previous posts there is no requirement for wiring, just a better link from the wheelsets to the pickup strip on the bogie, plus of course going from 4 axle current collection to 6. In addition the retaining clip on the top of the gear tower has a very convenient hole in it. The drive worm below it looked decidedly dry, so a little lube was administered. Re-assembled and the transformation is remarkable. Lastly a tweak of the decoder CV's, especially the start voltage setting and the 40 is nothing short of excellent. Running is smooth, quiet and very controlable. The loco will creep smoothly at a near stall with 7 mk.2's in tow without a hint of stalling. Without going into the rights or wrongs of whether we should need to carry out such mods on a new loco, I hope this will be of help to some of you willing to have a go. Ken

Yep. same here, all lighting functions fine but no go. A good push and sometimes it will work, and once running will run fine but cannot start unassisted. Much as other posters, rang Hattons but they are out of stock and are not re-ordering at the moment, so it's back for a credit. Shame as it looks great.

63' underframe DMU's please, could a generic underframe unit be the basis for classes 114, 117, 119, 123, 124, 125, 126 & 127. I would be more than happy to invest in some Trans Pennine sets, all boxed up as a complete unit like the Bachmann Blue Pullman, plain green, green with small yellow panels, and rail blue and grey. One day maybe!

Purchased a couple or poorly Claytons cheap via Ebay and carried out the following: Filed a small amount from the worm gear bearings in the top of the gear towers. This reduced some of the gear-train drag. Stripped the gear-trains, cleaned out the white grease & relubricated with a small amount of decent oil. Removed the flywheels from the original burnt out motors. Drilled out the flywheel centre hole to 2mm in order to fit onto a replacement motor. Replaced the motor with a Mashima 1624 can motor (Comet models £19.00). Fitted the original flywheels with loctite, making sure the overall motor/flywheel length is as per the original. Result: Performance is still reduced when stone cold although nowhere near as badly affected as the with the original set up. I can only presume there is still a degree of resistance within the gearing. Normal performance is achieved much more quickly than previously. Performance is always very smooth. Top speed is more than acceptable. The motor shows no signs whatsoever of overheating, even after prolonged roundy-round use of 1 hour or so. Both are fitted with Hornby R8249 decoders with no ill effects to the motor or decoder. Overall I am personally very happy with the outcome, especially as the total cost of each class 17 has been half the price of a new loco.

Purchased 8701 & 8702 from Cheltenham Model Centre at ModelRail Scotland on Saturday, and very pleased indeed. However both function correctly on DC with directional lights etc but when fitted with a Bachmann 21 pin decoder 8702 only has lighting in one direction and 8701 is as dead as a doornail. Reinstall the decoder blank, pop them on DC rolling road and all is sweetness and light. Anyone else having the same problems or is it me?
