RMweb Premium Roger Sunderland Posted March 16, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 16, 2022 Hi there This may well have been covered before, if so, apologies, please point me in the right direction. Is there a resource site that gives the commonly used cab side numeral sizes used on BR steam locos? Ie. 8”,9”,10”,12” etc? Im currently looking at M7s but I’ve had cause to ask the question on numerous occasions for many different classes.
LMS2968
It varied. Usually, cabside numerals were 8" high, but Swindon went for 9", while Darlington and Cowlairs used 10". So if your M7 went for overhaul at Cowlairs . . . 2 1

Good job the side panel of the bunker extended well along the cab otherwise the numbers might not fit
Wheatley
And if it was painted at St Rollox you can use whatever size you like whether it fits or not. https://thetransportlibrary.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=202701&search=42915
bécasse
The M7s had, or should have had, 8" lettering for the painted number. Note that its precise vertical positioning varied according, I suspect, to which works last overhauled the loco concerned.
RMweb Premium Roger Sunderland Posted March 17, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 17, 2022 Many thanks to all. 8” it is for the M7. It is a bit of a minefield-especially LNER locos. B1 s for instance seem to have larger numbers 10”??
