Caledonian Railways shades of blue

Recommended Posts

I find it interesting that scale makes a difference (or at least it does to my eyes):

In real life (1:1 scale) I think the darker blue on 828 looks stunning, whereas the lighter blue on 419 doesn't do it for me, but on the OO gauge models of 828 I chose the lighter blue because I preferred it in every shot I saw.

On your larger scale models I would struggle to chose...

They are. 828 is in the older dark blue, 419 is in the later light blue.

What the 'correct' colour of either is I'm not going to get drawn into ! Suffice it to say that I bought the lighter 812 and when (if) I ever get as far as painting my LRM kit of CR123 it will be in whichever shade currently available looks most like photos of it running in the 1960s !

Blue seems to be notorious for pigment fade and weathering. My three Caledonian loco's were all brush painted from the same pot. The Cardean was done first about 8 years ago (approx), the 908, 4 years ago (approx) and the Dunlastair lll, a year later. The last two have a single coat of satin varnish.
