Brian Harrap
Does anyone know what this is? Ok its a crane. But with two jibs mechanically linked together, neither having slewing capacity. How on earth would you use such a thing? Brian
RMweb Premium Dave John Posted June 4, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2022 Interesting. If it pivots about the centreline then perhaps military use for bridge and track replacement after war damage ? It looks like there is a bogie flat wagon at the rh end. Just a guess. Brian Harrap
Thanks Neil, thats fascinating, still can't get my head around how you would actually use it. Brian
woodenhead
It's a beam and joist laying contraption, one jib acts as a counterbalance to the other as it swings - I guess it picks up a beam, turns 180 degrees to drop the beam and then the other jib is in position to pick up the next beam and the cycle repeats. Only built in 1993, were they expecting a war?
RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted June 4, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 4, 2022 Don't you mean 1939? It's briefly mentioned in the January 2022 LocoRevue in connection with a forthcoming kit from Régions et Companies — €790 for the "early bird" price. It can't rotate through 180° but it can rotate a little — 10°.

Well in 1939 they were obviously expecting a war as they had built the Maginot line, so they had rather more anticipation than we did of problems in Europe. Recent events have shown Donald Trump managed to get one thing right (even if he does still think his pal Vladimir Vladimirovich is an OK guy) ... European countries spending less than 2% of GDP on defence just aren't doing enough.
