RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 13, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2022 (edited) A belated 50th birthday celebration was our excuse for three mates to have a week on the RhB Sunrise over London City Airport Flying with Swiss as I find their customer service excellent Short hop to Zurich main stn We caught the Sudostbahn service to Chur quite a lot of classic traction parked outside the station. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 13, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2022 Thusis yard Our base for the week, Hotel Grischuna, a minor legend amongst the RhB aficionados ;) an Allegra pushing a 7 car Albula / Alvra set on the left going downhill and a Ge4/4iii powering an identical set uphill. They leave and then the connecting Filisur - Davos shuttle departs Brand new Capricorn four car units are slowly taking over local and commuter area runs. They’ve got auto couplings so can’t pull freight like the Allegra’s.
swisspeat
Great photos Paul. I have stayed at that hotel several times. A real trainspotters find! Hope the weather stays good for you chaps.... Peter
Satan's Goldfish
How was the SOB from Zurich to Chur? Only ever had SBB IC on that route and didn't realise there were other options. Very envious, we're long overdue a trip back to Hotel Grischuna. Are you seeing much of the rest of the system while you're there?

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 13, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2022 The view from the room was quite good We went off in search of some dinner An Alvra set sweeps in pushed by 647, one of three now carrying the big logo livery Coop pulling the train up the pass crosses and we catch the Davos shuttle
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 13, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2022 When they leave the blinds up in the Capricorn units you get a good view Davos used to be a hive of shunting with coaches being added to push pull sets but it’s mostly Capricorns on passenger now so no ability to haul odd coaches or wagons On the plus side the goods are still shunted so currently Davos still has a Tm2/2 and a new hybrid Geaf2/2 seen here. Geaf stands gor G - Narrow Gauge e - electric a - battery f - remote control (shunters belt pack) Tm is, T - Tractor / Shunter m - diesel

Are you seeing much of the rest of the system while you're there? SOB won the contract to provide IR services to Chur. It is their 'Aare Lithe' brand (IR service Bern - Zurich - Chur) . It is the third element in SOB's 'trilogy' of services using the new Traverso EMUs (Voralpen Express, Treno Gottardo and Aare Linth) If you look at the official Kursbuch, you will find that a recent innovation is the addition of the operator at the head of each train column, eg: https://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadmin/fap_pdf_fields/2022/900.pdf You will see that THU (Thurbo), SOB and SBB now serve Chur Edited September 14, 2022 by Gordonwis 1

Gordonwis
Talking of RhB locos losing their advertising liveries, of course Sod's law struck for me at Reichenau Tamins in June, when an otherwise imposing double headed freight had the Ge4/4II with the least red bodywork of the lot...

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 14, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2022 Glad your enjoying them, 7 more days to go 😉 Our first full day, view from the balcony at breakfast. It was a tad misty Coop pushing an Alvra set with a GEX on the back. Reichenau was clear of mist as we changed trains
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 14, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) They seem to berth Capricorn’s all over the place and an interesting thing is both pantographs are left raised while berthed. 633 arrives as we head for Disentis. The sets serving Scuol Tarasp to Disentis diagrams are the only ones where driving trailers for push pull aren’t the norm and the loco always runs round. At Schnaus, just West of Ilanz we pass the newish intermodal terminal that has replaced the Valser depot and Haik van traffic. The swap bodies are very smart though and transferred with a reach stacker. Disentis Edited September 14, 2022 by PaulRhB
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 14, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2022 Disentis to Andermatt on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) Andermatt as we descend from the Oberalp Pass The loco runs around to head back to Disentis. The Brig - Andermatt service on the left and the Göschenen shuttle on the right arriving.
