Hornby Dublo 8F running issue

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a poorly repainted early 2-rail HD 8F to restore and repaint in the style of the scarce Wrenn WD 8F. Why pay up to a thousand for one when it can be done for under twenty quid?!

The finished model is shown below. I have a query about its running however: it runs well but its clean and lubricated half-inch motor does get a little warm, which suggests that the magnet, probably original and now the best part of 60 years old, is beginning to weaken. I have some quite small neo magnets, would attaching one in an inconspicuous place to the original magnet be likely to improve the overall magnetism, or is it likely to just cause problems?

Incidentally, the transfers are one of Railtec's excellent commissions.

Many thanks

Tony

Looking great! Based on this request I decided to make a new transfer pack available off-the-shelf to help anybody else (a) not wishing to spend a 1000 quid on the Wrenn loco and/or (b) having to ask the wife to sell one of her shoes.

For this type of motor,  I use a couple of ring neo magnets*, padded with steel washers, but I have had success with a couple of 6mm cube magnets stuck on Tri-ang motor bogies. I can't see any reason why it should't work here. Try it - at worst it doesn't work and you are no worse off.

Strictly a Wrenn 8F would have a ringfield motor.... (I know - shut up!)

*These are not as strong as the full size ones sold as replacements and more like the original magnet.

I've thought of doing an 8F as FS Gr737, but there arises the problem of scale - 1:76 against 1:80 for everything else!

https://transportfever2italianfans.forumfree.it/?t=78001461  (sorry in Italian).

Allegedly being very free steaming compared to the constipated home grown product*, they had a tendency to lift their safety valves. Since this offence made their crew liable to a fine, they were understandably not very popular.

* This seems to have got lost in cyberspace:

These benefited from Franco-Crosti boilers, but trials in the UK showed little or no improvement.

(The law of diminishing returns strikes again.)

Hi all,

The only decent remagnetizer I know of is the one by Ronald Dodd. They are made to order. But they are quite expensive at i think about £150.00. I would love one but cannot afford one. So I have to make do with using a very strong magnet from a computer hard drive.

The 1/2" does overheat in the metal bodied locos. They are fine in the R1.   I think that's why they went to the Ring Field.

I too use stacks of super neo ring magnets,  to replace tired  originals in 1/2" and X04 motors but generally find my original equipment 1/2" magnets are fine in plastic bodied locos, but the motors overheat at medium speed with heavy loads in the Castles.

I have fitted some 1/2" motors with K's Mk2 5 pole armatures which make them very smooth and very gutless but I have never had any success with super Neos added to existing original equipment magnets.

I'm back in Airstrip the UK next week for a while and will try to remember to take a photo of a Tri-ang motor bogie with add-on magnets. (This relies on several unlikely co-incidences - remembering, finding a camera, finding the chassis....)
