Shed Driver
I don't know if this has been asked before. I have several Portescap gearboxes which have seized due to the original grease drying out. In the past I think that I used white spirit to free them. Is this a good idea or are there better solvents? Norman
andyman7
I've used lighter fluid in the past as I had it to hand. Lighter fluid evaporates off very quickly and is less greasy than white spirit.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted December 20, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2022 Yes it has been asked, and its taken me a while to find in in This Topic My solution in is there. DO NOT power them up before un-seizing! Best of luck, Dave.
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted December 20, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2022 White spirit works well, GT85 spray is better.
Shed Driver
Thanks for the replies and the link to the previous thread. I think i'll continue with white spirit ( as I have some) and different switch cleaners could have various solvents, some of which could affect the plastic. RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted December 21, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2022 GT85 doesn't attack any plastics as far as I know and it's a lubricant as well.
decauville1126
I've had several like this over the years. As has been already said, don't power up! I remove the gearboxes, then test the motor - usually sweet as a nut. Then leave the gearbox overnight in isopropanol (IPA but not the beer!), and then drain and spin until it's free. Relube with TriFlow ptfe oil (try a bicycle shop or Amazon), spin and reattach motor. Then power up and all should be well. Now is the time to flog it on ebay! Things have moved on vastly since their day and I've found the High-Level gearboxes and motor range excellent.

At fifty quid a throw second hand quite a hall if I flogged them but then what would it cost to change them ? Something to NOT think about over the Christmas drivel on the box season Edited December 24, 2022 by Graham456
JeffP
I've used Wickes Paintbrush Cleaner. The bluey-purple stuff. It's an excellent degreaser and has the added plus of being easily flushed away with hot water, effectively removing debris, grit etc. Using very hot water means that after a quick shake, the gearbox dries quickly and can then be re-lubed. roythebus1
Oddly enough I've just found a couple of Portescaps in the bits box and 3 K's Black Fives fitted with them. There's also and Airfix BR standard with a Portescap motor and mech, all still working!

High Level now supply their own motors to go with their gearbox range, and these are even better than Mashimas! I believe they are coreless types, like Portescaps. High Level Kits have their own topic HERE
