RMweb Premium Gordieb01 Posted December 21, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2022 I'm currently enjoying putting together the GW style Metcalfe wayside station kit in 4mm scale. (PO 0238 I've noticed from other threads on this forum that some modelers with other card kits or scalescenes use acrylic matt varnish to tone down the shine of the card finish on other models. I presume this has been done with Metcalfe Model buildings as well? Have others used weathering powders on these buildings also to get an improved finish? I must say the Wayside station kit seems very well designed and is a really attractive prototype. Looking foward to seeing the result on my layout.
grahame
The shiny sheen of Metcalfe kits is one of their downsides. It's well worth giving them a coat of matt varnish, from an aerosol or air-brush, to tone them down before adding any weathering.
AyJay
Do you spray on the matt varnish while all the pieces are flat and unassembled; or is there a case for doing it when assembled?
grahame
Spray before any window glazing is fitted, preferably when the building is assembled but if you need to glaze before assembly then do it then.
sb67
Def give them a coat of matt varnish, that way any powders will have something to adhere too, be careful not to put too much at once on though, I've always put on a couple of light coats from a rattle can or I've brush painted it on. That's how these buildings were finished. I used watercolour pencils as well as powders to weather.
