EddieB
Breaking news - the greatest footballer (of the greatest team) has passed on. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42751517 Given the news emerging during the World Cup, not unexpected - but still sad. RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted December 30, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2022 An astonishing player, and, rare for footballers who reach that level, completely grounded and seemingly liked, genuinely, by all who encountered him, a superb role model. Probably the greatest player ever, shining even in the company of the likes of Maradonna, Cryuff, or Best before the booze got hold of him. The man who made the beautiful game beautiful. RIP.
Ozexpatriate
Pelé played his last 'competitive' match (of all places) here in Portland at Civic Stadium - now Providence Park, home of the MLS Timbers and NWSL Thorns. It was the old North American Soccer League’s "Soccer Bowl" cup match between the NY Cosmos and the Seattle Sounders on August 28, 1977. The Cosmos won their second "Soccer Bowl" title. He would play again in a 'friendly' on October 1 between the NY Cosmos and Santos FC (playing a half for each team) at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
sb67
An absolute legend and true great and seemingly very humble and loved around the world. As said probably the greatest player ever! May he rest in peace and enjoy his eternal kickabout.
Ron Ron Ron
There are not many famous sports personalities, or even famous statesmen, who’s death commands top billing on all news channels and newspaper front pages, around the world. The tributes to Pele have exceeded those given even to many world leaders. That says something very important about this great man and the esteem in which he was held throughout the decades. I still have memories of that 1970 World Cup in Mexico and that fantastic Brazil team. RIP Pele .
