RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 19, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) This is a model of my Grandparents’ bungalow in Seaford that I made in the early 1980s - over 40 years ago. I scratch built it using 1mm plywood, Perspex sheet, cardboard, paint and sawdust. Time has not been good to it so my latest project is to repair and refurbish it. Some parts are missing so these will need to be rebuilt. Cheers Darius Edited January 19, 2023 by Darius43 14 1
Halvarras
Once a modeller, always a modeller! 😀 I can understand why you feel the need to restore this to its former glory. I'm finding that the older I get (and I turn 70 this year) the more nostalgic I feel about things. That's why I left a lot of new stuff in their boxes to give my very first engine, a Tri-ang 'Nellie', a thorough overhaul, and give it a Dock Shunter sidekick. Oh, and create that Large Logo 37183 (Mark 2), having been impressed by the sight of the real one just outshopped by Swindon Works in April 1984. Actually I do wonder whether either would have happened if I hadn't found your 'Tri-ang English Electric Type 3' and the 'Jintystein etc' threads on here - looks like RMweb has a lot to answer for but never mind, I enjoyed the projects and putting a mass of spare parts to good use was most gratifying. Just this week I have started building an Ian Kirk Gresley Buffet Car kit (in BR rebuilt condition) I bought 43 years ago, to run with some Tri-ang Hornby Mark 1s resprayed around 1980 I still have as they were hauled by a fleet of diesel-hydraulic models which this year I intend to dig out and refurbish, as I put a lot of effort into them between 1989 and 2001 - my new stuff will just have to slumber in their boxes for a while longer. As for buildings, your project here has for the first time prompted a thought about recreating the bungalow my father built for the family in 1960/61 (uh-oh, here I go again.....!) on a plot of land adjoining his parents' house in Cornwall (it still exists but now greatly extended). I have front and rear photos I took in May 1975 and even the original architect's drawings, given to me by my mother. It would have an added poignancy because we moved into 'the home that Dad built' on 27th January 1962 and he passed away suddenly just seven years later - up until that point the 1960s had been.....er...... "fab" for me, including family surfing weekends, discovering railways and my model railway interest kicking off with the afore-mentioned 'Nellie'. And that bungalow was considerably simpler in outline than your Grandparents' house!

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 24, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2023 (edited) Found some photos that I took when the model was first completed. These will come in useful for the refurb. Also some pics of a model that I made of our family home in Belfast a year or so after I made the bungalow model. Halvarras
Excellent (and as usual rapid!) model restoration of a very interesting home - I'm particularly taken with that neat little corner porch! 2
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 27, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2023 The corner porch and “front door” were seldom used. My Grandma kept plants in pots in it - it always smelt of dried vegetation in there… Cheers Darius
montyburns56
Wow, that's quite a refurbishment, but there's one thing missing.... a model of Martin Roberts standing in one of the rooms talking to the owners about how they have transformed the property.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 27, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2023 I remember my Grandad sitting on a deckchair on the patio in the summer months - smoking his pipe and listening to the cricket on the radio. I can make the deckchair and hopefully Modelu will come up with a suitable figure in due course… Cheers Darius
