Working on 30368s cab this morning.

The cab components - roof strakes scratch built due to me loosing the etched parts. The cab sides and spectacle plate etches have had rivet and set screw detail added as closely as possible to the prototype. It is clear from images though that these details change as the loco is overhauled....

Spectacle plate temp fit. Looks a bit like a 700 class now.

Cab sides just tacked. Sadly the motor does protrude into the cab but I will see what can be done.

Today's progress has focused on the cab. The cab interior is simplified given the motor protrudes into where the firedoor would be but its ok.

Good job R. Is it useful having the Hornby machine as a Visual Aid?

Yes Phil it helps but also its encouragement to see if I can better it in any way - so far not much!

In some ways it shows how good so many/almost all RTR Locomotives have become. I'd love to see how they produce the parts. Not so keen on sitting in a Chinese factory watching assembly though!

Brief progress report on detailing 30368.

The vacuum ejector pipe added to the running plate valance. Also the gravity oil feed pipe has been fixed to the boiler and firebox. Wobbly pipe is as prototype. One of the clips is going to be replaced!

Love the lubricator pipework. I thought they were hydrostatics ?

You could be right, the H15's were not sure on the 700.

Most of the loco body plumbing now done, pipework to the clack valves always a bit of a struggle.

Markits clack valves used for the boiler feeds.

Hope the reversing rod fits in its slot and clears the feed pipe...

That is looking like a Motor.. Clacking Job on those Clacks!

Chimney maketh the Model.

Question Richard. Can you tell me why a Ship has a Funnel but a Loco has a Chimney? (Not a trick, I just thought of it).

30368 loco body is now almost complete. I will fit the buffer beam etc after painting. I am very pleased with the result. So now on to the tender.

A big thankyou to Phil (Mallard60022) for giving me the kit to complete. The H15 30524 is all run in and ready for delivery - keep up the good work on the layout Phil - looking good and an H15 "bursting" out of the tunnel hauling a rake of Maunsell coaches will look great.

AS good as the Hornby example - I hope so, not sure it is any better though apart from the fact I can say that I built it!

A little filler required in one or two places.

Rather it was alive and in use than gathering dust in some lonely Box under my pile of layout mess.

Looks pretty Good to me.

I've forgotten, was there a Tender?

Tender is making good progress. I like the way that PDK make the tender chassis seperate from the tender tank. It makes brake gear construction easier and the provision of pick-ups that much simpler.

I have not updated this build for some time. Been busy with other things this last week or so. The tender is almost complete. If anyone wants to see some more of the construction images then let me know and I will post them. The tender has pickups on the trailing wheels and therefore when complete I will couple to the loco smei-perm rather like the Hornby version.

Not looking too bad compared to the Hornby version - in  a few places it is a little more detailed. Tender soldered together apart from white metal parts .

Super job Richard. I found another pic of 30368 sitting almost at the end of a Siding at The Shed, with the Snow Plough sat just in front of it, but not attached. Did I save it or note where I saw it? Nope. Doh!

You ready for the SEF Arthur lump yet?

Hi Phil,

I think I have a copy of that picture somewhere. I will have to build the plough when time permits.

I am probably going to start Phase Two of my layout next - much encouraged by your efforts to build such a well photographed section of the LSWR Main Line to the west. Brilliant - keep at it.

Will arrange a get together fairly soon to give you 30524. Some images to remind you of the beast. PS It now has coal!

Waiting to get back on shed as her sister engine passes on a Salisbury local.

30368 after some fiddling with the tender/loco coupling distance runs very well although some of the tight curves on my layout are a challenge. Just needs numbering etc and weathering.

I have now completed 30368. I really enjoyed building my version of a locomotive that I saw most mornings on my way to school and then on Eastleigh scap line shortly after starting my apprenticeship at Eastleigh Works. The loco runs very well and the tender pick-up arrangement work well, a first for me,  tender pick ups I mean not something working well!

30368 as she would have appeared following her last overhaul at Eastleigh. She has the second BR insignia on the tender and she had lost the triangular Dubb's builders plates.

IMG_7853.JPG.c4e1e26ecb63db61f067cefb9628d0b8.JPG

The images on this side of the loco had the flash suppressed.

I rather like this image, one of my better snaps. It won't take Basingstoke long to get the "Pride of Basingstoke" mucky but to be fair, they cleaned her too.

My thanks go to Phil (Mallard60022) for donating the PDK kit, I am very pleased with the result.

Kind regards,

Richard B
