KeithHC
Just a quick question for all you experts. I notice from pictures that located above the drivers window there is a cut out about 3ins square located under the gutter. On some pictures the background in the cut out is body colour and some times red. Do I presume this is an indicator for handbrake on or off. RMweb Gold RFS Posted July 3, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 3, 2023 Which EMU/DEMU in particular? There are a lot to choose from and a picture would help.
KeithHC
In particular both the 2/3H and 3D DEMUs these show up on pictures on Google. Just checked and it appears on most other BR(S) mu so probably from post 1951. Keith

Keith Not sure about the cut out that you're referring to, but I always understood that the 'unofficial' indicator for the handbrake being on, certainly on BR(S) EMUs, was a shoe paddle being inserted in the hand brake wheel and thus visible in the non-drivers side front cab window. 4

Wickham Green too
The little square recess above the window division - they happen to be red & blue in this case but I think that's a livery matter ! 7375 and 2112 : East Croydon : 17/4/87

bécasse
Definitely cab ventilators, the theory being that when the sliding window each side is shut it is airtight - I did say theory!
