Less than 9 weeks to go before the BIG one..

Hopefully I shall be there for the two days this year, though I might be spending a bit of time on the Perfect Miniatures stand as at Halifax..

Who's going ?

Can't make it there this year as I'm at the Kernow/YMR exhibition but several of my Winchester Modeller buddies will be there with Jeff Geary's Whitchurch layout.

Cheers

I realise that members get their admission for £5 but is it really worth £12 - if you were thinking of making a start in O gauge then you would want to visit a show like this to get ideas and see what is available - but the admission price would put you off - how can the Guild justify this price for those you would assume they were trying to get to join. Does anyone know the number of visitors against the number of members/non members?

I did wonder if the ticket would cover both days but it isn't mentioned on their web site. However the price does admit purchaser, partner and two children under 16 - which is OK if you have a partner and two children under 16 :D No mention of an age concession either - at the Derby show we reduced our adult admission from £6 to £5 when we moved to a cheaper venue - no one thanked us for that - all we got were complaints about not having an age concession as if it was felt to be an automatic right  I'm pleased that I can now use the Guild as an example as I guess the majority of their members would qualify.

An interesting question...

I paid my £12 one year and joined the G.O.G. that day which took the £7 difference off my membership fee; all well and good and I got my welcome pack etc; I was less than impressed to receive notice of renewal about six months later at full price for the next 12 months; membership appears to run April to March regardless of when in the year you actually join?

I didn't renew (for other reasons as well as that) but I'll still pay the £12 this year, as I did last year; it covers me and my lad (for another 9 years anyway!!) and I think it's well worth it as everything there is of some interest, and it's a "one-stop shop" for all the O scale stuff you could possibly require (affording it is, of course, another matter...). Personally speaking, if I could only get to one show a year this would be it, even at the £12 price, quite good compared, for example, (with some for parking, in the Town car parks at least) to the price for Adult and Child plus £8(?) Parking at the Warley/NEC. That show may be bigger but the amount of 7mm present (especially Traders) is much lower.

Hi Mike

This always raises its head, and I don't think the organisers can win here.

My take is that £12 for a full weekend, to include spouse/issue as relevant is a bargain. You might just get a 1 1/2 hour footy match, a round of drinks, 3 packets of cigarettes, a meal out for 1 at a restaurant for this - or 2 me days pursuing your hobby, meeting lots of interesting people, being amazed at the sheer variety of products, seeing a a good few scale-specific layouts, and generally getting enthused.

I know that if you don't do 2 days, dont have wife/kids, and can only get there for a couple of hours it's steep, but it costs a lot to put on the show in hire of venue and organisation, and frankly, I'm just grateful it's there.

My best spent £12 of the year (except it only costs me a fiver as a member of the Guild!)

Go once at least. I got dragged into O gauge when I attended a Guild show in Worcester, and was blown away by what was available - I had no idea.

3 packets of cigarettes ? Clearly not of the smoking contingent eh Richard laugh.gif

You'd be lucky to get 2 packs for £12 these days..

I'll be going for the first time this year, on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it, but do feel that £12 is a bit steep. Do S7 society members get a discount?

I'm hoping to have my 37 in a state where it can run up and down the S7 demo track on the society stand, but there's a lot of work to do before I get to that stage!

Agree It is a bargain, take the wife or one of the kids, cheap weekend.

But for a single punter whose up for a day, it seems rather expensive to me, never been a fan of weekend tickets at the same price, would much prefer to see them charged perhaps two quid more for the privalige, same for spouses.

I do agree with members been subsidised though. I once joined the guild, it didn't offer anything for me personally and so I didn't renew after that year, although it does offer a pretty good package and I can see why people keep up their membership.

Entrance fee, travelling costs, parking and perhaps something to eat and drink all adds up, possibly one of the reasons I havn't been for a few years.

Look forward to seeing it there Pugsley... Like I always say, nothing like a deadline... laugh.gif

I don't think S7 society members get a discount.. In fact, I think some Gauge 0 Guild members would have the S7 society members paying more for entry... IT WAS A JOKE... IT WAS A JOKE ! I'll get my coat.. wink.gif

I agree with everything you put, and (as a similar individual modeller with no kids travelling about 200 miles to get there) will probably be why I don't end up going this year - which is annoying as many of the useful smaller traders I would need to get stuff from don't advertise anywhere else, or visit other shows, or even have websites which means that they lose out on potential sales from people like me.

I'd rather spend £50 on a kit or something than getting to, and in, the model show.

I can't help but wonder sometimes the relative smallness of the O gauge userbase is because it's so difficult to get hold of stuff to model in it, unless you're a member of the guild?

I'm not so sure... I think other factors work against O scale more than those points; namely the space it takes up, and (trying not to open another can of worms!!) the sheer cost of it... I'd say that these days Internet access is far more important than membership of the G.O.G. to get hold of stuff and get help, advice and encouragement from other modellers.

I've certainly found RMWEB very useful in that regard :)

  • 1 month later...

Just got back from Telford and thought it was an excellent show with great trade and super layouts, but best of all people are so polite and friendly with no smelly urks to contend with. On that score at least its worth the money.

Regards.

Ps. can't wait for Warley to see how good Merseysides Miss Marples Looks!!!

As a first time attendee today I though it was excellent value for money, (Don't forget that the ticket admits a family) the sheer scale of the event, massive choice of traders and some truly inspirational layouts made it well worth the entry cost and the drive there and back.

I have always intended going in the past but I bought advanced tickets on line and made the effort and I'm well pleased that I did. I had the exhibition guide in advance so I had some idea of the size but actually being there and seeing just what is available was quite an eye opener. I will certainly be returning next year!

Regards

Michael

Cutler 2579, you are so right. Seem to be such a different breed of modeller and not the scrum at the NEC we see every year.

If the guild can do it and provide the space and enjoyment that can be found at Telford, why not at the NEC.

Like Jollysmart, I was a first time visitor and new to 7mm. If you were needing the goodies to get going and the inspiration to get on with it, it was all there under one roof.

Advice willingly offered freely by traders and exhibitionists alike. Roll on next year.

Got Bristol as well in January which was a good do last year to look forward to. So just about one good show every six months and time between for wallet to recover.

I went for the first time this year, as well. I was very impressed, it really is one of the best shows I've been to. Well organised and laid out, with plenty of room around the stands. It would have been nice to have had a couple more layouts, but I'll definitely be going again.

Great show as usual.

As a member, the £5 admission for two days is a real bargin, it's the cost of all the stuff I "just have to buy" that is my big problem, never mind all the lovely stuff that I can only dream about.

I have got into the habit of pre-ordering bits and pieces (especially kits) by telephone or email for collection at the exhibition, which works well for both parties as the supplier knows what to bring and I am not dissapointed.

I cannot speak highly enough of the service given by all suppliers I use (large and small) so a big thank you to "The 0 Gauge Traders" at Guildex from me (if not my wallet !!)

Fully inspired by the skills of others and stocked up with raw materials for the winter, what more could the average modeller ask ?

regards

Stewart
