RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Very much a minimal village station so quick run round and away down the hill.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Grabbing the front balcony we enjoyed 731 up close back down to Zittau back under the standard gauge approaching the main station. 731 shunts across the main station forecourt to runround. And that was it as 731 departed again. Excellent railway still and looking well looked after without so much of the rusting hulks and touristy add ons of UK preserved lines. Apart from being a little less dirty it reminded me very much of the previous visit, definitely not spoilt by the huge improvements in Eastern Germany. So homebound we admired the Signalbox and got an appropriate unit to take us back.
burgundy
Shame that you did not have a chance to stop in Oybin. The apfelstrudel was memorable! For those unable to visit in person, the webcams are interesting. Best wishes Eric

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Nothing ground breaking as time was limited but some nice noise from 731.
Mike Buckner
Thank you for posting this. What a wonderful journey. The generous collection of photographs enables us to enjoy it vicariously. Nice one!
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted October 1, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 It took me three attempts over 20 years before I finally managed to make the connection at Zittau for the narrow gauge. Lovely photos that want to make go back again.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 We spent the evening wandering around Dresden,
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 There was a plan to spend the morning in the city then pop over to Radeburg to do the Loßnitzgrundbahn, that went a bit wrong! So we got another Dresden day card and went for breakfast, Spawn of hell pootled past, all right wheels of it! We stuck to rails ;) And walked through to the Frauenkirche. 25 years ago this was two stumps of rubble! It took them 11 years to recreate this and pretty much rebuild the square around it. Dresden has change a lot in the last thirty years. It’s now got quite a lot of restored, old looking, buildings that I suspect house much more modern hearts so probably easier to maintain. Whatever it’s a bustling clean and very nice city. It was ramping up for Oktoberfest, busy but civilised. A tiny remnant of the rubble. Sparrows grabbing crumbs from breakfast.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Fried, sorry, fired up 😉 from breakfast we headed East for about three miles, I do like that the rear cab is passenger seating, it appears to have emergency controls but as each line has return loops or is a loop most teams seem to only have doors one side and one cab. Some do have doors both sides but seem to be the minority. We arrived at Schillerplatz and walked over the bridge. Dresden Schwebebahn, you pay a small supplement on top of your day pass, It’s a funicular version of the more famous hanging monorail by the same builder, and it’s a lot shorter! But worth it,
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Neustadt station for a bit of train therapy, this was outside the toilets. Ok now is where it went a bit wrong, we headed for Radebuel Ost on route 4 but strangely turned right at Neustadt station. Ok we thought maybe a diversion round a block. Nope suddenly the tram display changes to 13 and off we head back into the city! No warning just turned round and headed back. This wasn’t a major trauma as we had other places to go so let’s do it on Friday we said and off we went!
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 An earlier start the next day to make the trip to Cranzahl of around two hours with one change on the way. The centre of Dresden station holds a terminal set of platforms with the through lines raised up on either side. Lots of action,
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 A fairly tight connection so photos of Cranzahl station will have to wait for later. You arrive on the SG on a nice curved metal viaduct. Another loco sat in the siding. And off we go. The line is grouped with two others in SDG to share essential management and maintenance, they also swap locos around for events. Nine coaches on with the front three and rear two booked for parties. Decent load though so it sounded great! Loading off track scooters in the van. Staff were again friendly and helpful and the coaches comfortable and clean.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 Just before Kurort Oberwiesenthal you cross an impressive steel bridge. and terminate at the station.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 There’s a few souvenirs in the booking office and time to watch the run round plus another L45 shunting the extra coaches off our train. This older Sachsen coach we nabbed for the return trip and was better than the modern ones with windows that fold.

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 A selection of old goods stock and maintenance stock The unit crew were taking a break and soon joined by the steam crew in the little sheds between the trains. After servicing the loco Parked up nicely for us! The unit them shunted over to the other platform for departure. 8
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 We decided to wait for the next one and explore. The ramp down from the transfer wagon. We watched the steam depart,

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2023 The final full day and we had booked lunch so spent the morning in the transport museum which shares the square with the Frauenkirche. for a relatively small museum it packs it in and is full of information, every display is bi-lingual in German and English, absolutely wonderful because even though I try the technical stuff defeats me. An excellent museum! BMW inspired by the Austin 7, no seriously ;) Sadly the only Saxon Meyer we caught this time was a stuffed and mounted one. Out the cab rear.
