Hi everyone,

I noticed in a video of 46115 Scots Guardsman that the front pair of tender wheels are discs, while the other two pairs are spoked, which I'd never noticed before.

I did some googling and it seems like it has not always been like this.

I'm just curious, does anyone know if these were swapped in after the hot box on the GBXV tour? Where are they from?

I hope I've put this in the right place!

Best,

Adam

Speculation…

Is the disc wheels spring more tense, axlebox lower than the other two wheels ?

is it possible a smaller dimension wheel has been used ?

4’3” is suggested as a Stanier tender wheel, I can’t think of any diesels with that, most are 3’7” or 3’9”…

class 81 was 4’ but I doubt theres many of them lying about.

Mk1’s are 3’6”…

given the various LMS tenders onsite, (at least 2 Black 5’s, 8f, 2x Jubilees ) i’m surprised they couldnt have effected a tender swap, or borrowed a wheel.

I seem to remember that the LNER built some LMS 8Fs and they had disc wheels on the tenders so there are bound to be one or two sets about as spares when needed so I wouldn't worry about it.
