Michael Hodgson
There is a vast collectors market for nameplates. Some of the better known steam loco names go for tens of thousands of pounds, and even the lesser known names and diesel plates are usually in the hundreds of pounds. If it's worth less than £100 it's probably off an industrial or foreign engine. You can usually find some listed in any railwayana auction. And they all get photographed for the auction catalogue. And presumably also for insurance purposes! Number plates (even flame-cut painted numbers off something like a scrapped 47) change hands for surpising sums. Proper cast brass numbers are worth a lot more. It's not as though they are unique - there was generally another identical one on the other side, and I have known cases of a third one, presented to the person who named it. And it's not as though they keep the names for the life of the loco these days - renaming seems quite common. Because of their value, it's not unusual for preserved locos to carry fibreglass replicas, the original sometimes being flogged off to help fund restoration. Fraud and forgery is not unknown in this field and you generally can't tell by looking at the face of the plate, the rear of a casting tends to be the give-away. Flood
Here's a couple that haven't seen a loco side in just over 30 years. 50011 bought from Collectors Corner in 1992 and sold in 2007 at Sheffield Railwayana Auctions. 50028 bought through BR tender process and collected from Collectors Corner in June 1991. Still in my front room.
