hayfield
I need to clean some old brass and Nicklesilver brass etches, I have used Carrs cleaning solution in the past, it works very well and for the amount you get in a bottle its expensive. I have come across this from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brass-Clock-Cleaning-Concentrate-Solution/dp/B0B1F7H6R6/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.O-2Jd4UjNGgAc8Qcl35aShHVNzjd6YaxOpI5uNciesR2gkn0NNUe9acN9nO5f-qgmcSvfG60HY1RUoMEXe-al5LJ-D65O4Vks9G3shPIDK4XmEWaW7jTuYkNethWtRk2wKZeNftcoFlpGYLHxOZyPbsxeeDSLEZl1H9SpZfSKidHTWJcC_ZwYvt3bYKjV7ZIad79pxjdvA7N2arRnHUR9AS3Md3tHkx8Z0ZDTLYCSzwY2tTW8nYGIyQobW9ePcnFBktz1psv_-UEPSif-eZSgjt16OWIYW7zTZoFlLWubrc.zpEc1oxgLHQzjgncok1BNp1qBg9Fraxh7RRrZS5M7c0&dib_tag=se&keywords=Clock%2Bmakers%2Bcleaning%2Bsolution&qid=1708105245&sr=8-1&th=1 Clock makers cleaning solution , any thoughts about it please
RMweb Premium DIW Posted February 16 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 16 The fellow who repairs clockwork items (especially clocks and watches!) on 'The Repair Shop' appears to use this (or something with a similar label) in solution in an ultrasonic bath.
ian@stenochs
Viakal cleaner, from almost any supermarket, works for me and it is quite cheap. I use it for cleaning up after soldering too, 1 1 1
Mike Buckner
Many Lima wheelsets are brass, they tarnish badly when unused for a period. I wonder how well it would work to whip them out and soak in an ultrasonic bath with one of these fluids for a short period.

I'd always thought that ultasonic baths can be harmful to plastic, and the Lima wheels are insulated on at least one side with a plastic bush on the axle. You might get away with it, but tread carefully! John.
hayfield
On the left is what I brought and on the right what's being cleaned. The bottom side was very tarnished and been in for about 5 hours, the upper etch has only been in for just over an hour. Whilst not as shiny as on TV, I have no idea how long they soak them for on TV plus they may have started off much less tarnished Still very impressed and as I will be selling this (incomplete) kit cheaply anything is better than what it was like
hayfield
Taken out of the solution at 10pm and given a quick burnish, nearly back like new Well worth the £12 it cost

I left the remainder of the etches in the solution overnight and took them out this morning and gave them a good wash This is how they came out with no further treatment.
