duncrieviesidings
Hi all. I'm after some information about which Class 27 locomotives were fitted with dual (air and vacuum) brakes and running during the 1980s. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA Adrian
RMweb Gold nigb55009 Posted April 20 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20 Have you tried the Derby Sulzers wesbite, there`s a section on it that covers 26s and 27s.
Flood
Prior to January 1980 the following were dual braked: 27/0: 34, 38, 41 and 42 ex 27/1: all locos (45 to 56 when renumbered) ex 27/2: all locos (57 to 66 when renumbered) between January 1983 and January 1984: 1, 3, 5, 8, 24, 25 and 26 dual braked No more after that. Edit: when the 27s had their heavy general overhauls around 1983-84 the following changed from drop side windows to sliding ones and lost the beading across the plating of the connection doors. 38 and 42 in early 1985 (beading previously removed, water tanks and boilers removed at overhaul) 46, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 (ex 102, 105 to 112) 59, 63, 66 (ex 205, 209, 212) Edited April 20 by Flood 1 1
'CHARD
Amazing to reflect on these (/0s at least) staying vb, vi or vo in the main right up to withdrawal. Scottish Region was amazing back in '84.

Scottish Region was amazing back in '84. My main experience was of the 27s being thrashed on the l/h Edinburgh-Dundee trains which started in 1981 (previously DMUs were used). 4 coaches of Mk1/2z stock usually TSO/BSO but sometimes with SK/BSK. Very occasionally, a cl.26 could appear but ISTR they weren't suited and could self-ignite! Cl.47s became more common in later years before the trains were replaced by cl.150/2 Sprinters in 1987(?). Yes, I spent many an hour linesiding in Dysart in summer '82, moving a relative into a house that backed onto the ECML. Then in the years '84 - '87 I covered some of the action during holidays and on one occasion a university field-trip to Edinburgh! I had plenty of 27s as they were in the clear majority, a few 47s including my antepenultimate one for sight, xb HA 47018, rescuing an errant 27055 (that I cleared the class with for sight) on a Cardenden - Waverley service. 37169 I think, in summer '84 deputising for a missing Type 2, a Peak of some description and a pair of Class 20s. Wonderful days, the sun always shone, and the odd illicit pint in Glasgow was very welcome too before an overnight leap to Stirling and beyond!
Strathyre
A very young me, at that time a secondman at Eastfield, left hand using the dual train brake (in vacuum mode) on 27034 in the summer of 1980 working the 0806hrs Glasgow Queen St- Oban. The second photo is her at Oban ready to work back to Glasgow with my driver Gil McFarlane (left) and Queen St guard Gus MacInnes (who recently retired as a driver). Oh for a time machine...
