MTK BR Ultrasonic Test DMU

So received wisdom - almost never at first-hand - would have us believe!

I cannot speak for their loco kits, but the DMUs are eminently buildable and, for their time, quite acceptable 'layout' models.

Perhaps your friend was only accustomed to Airfix kits?

CJI.

He's a Caledonian Railway modeller, kit or scratch-builds all his stock but has said he'll never touch an MTK kit again!

Looking really good already, although it beats me how you managed to get three different colours applied in a matter of hours. Especially since one of them is yellow......!

I recon he started building these a couple of years ago… Darius just drops them in ever couple of days just to give the impression that it’s all happening now.

Sorry bit of cheek from me….. Your ability is fantastic and all your models look excellent I just wish I could achieve the same.

The right colour sequence, quick drying paint and careful masking.

- Cab front first: Halfords white primer followed by a couple of light coats of Halfords Mustard Yellow.  Leave for two hours.

- Mask the cab with paper barrier pieces to minimise masking tape (Tamiya) contact with the yellow.

- Airbrush the roof with thinned Humbrol Matt 106.

- Wait an hour then spray with Army Painter Matt Varnish.

- Mask the roof (previous cab masking stays in place)and the inside of the cab (to guard for overspray) then airbrush thinned Phoenix Rail Blue enamel to the sides and ends.

Cheers

Many thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule (!) to explain how you manage to achieve the seemingly impossible - it doesn't seem that impossible when explained like that! Very interesting.

Right, I'll let you get on then......😜!

He didn't take any time out of his busy schedule, Darius has two hands you know, one to type with and one to model with!

And I didn't believe building and finishing an MTK kit within one week was even remotely possible. Shows what I know......😬

An excellent job Sir, once again!

The turbine sound you can hear is Colin Massingham spinning in his grave, I'm sure he designed his kits to be unbuildable 😃.

Nobody told me that, so I just keep on building ‘em.

Well done Darius, what a brilliant job.

I don't think I have ever seen a model of this unit. Certainly not to the standard that you have achieved.

It brings back happy memories of good times at Wells-Krautkramer in Letchworth.

Ever thought about a working model? Sorry couldn't resist.

There are some pretty small probes about these days and connecting one to the gubbins of a smart phone would be a starting point.

That sounds like a great idea in principle. Are there small probes that can work without couplant though? Couplant would soon become a sticky mess all over the track and wheels!

It would need a lot of research. As I am now retired I no longer have access to the experts. I am sure there are people in the business who would see it as a challenge. The consistency and conductivity would be critical.

Getting a bit OT, so better keep this space for Darious and his super models.

I would have to agree, of course, especially after enjoying the hospitality of Shenstone Road and Hornsey Broadway this week!
