RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted April 22 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22 (edited) Next on the bench is this MTK version of the BR Derby Lightweight Ultrasonic Test Train. I already have a set of Railtec decals for it. Spot the use of press studs in the test wheel assembly mouldings. Reminds me that maybe 35 years ago now somebody handed me a pair of thick plastic Derby Lightweight bodyshells (presumably Kirdon....??) with a request to see if I could create this Ultrasonic Test Unit on Hornby Class 110 chassis. The mission was accomplished, despite having few photos to work from - consequently the wheelskate thingy was basic but it looked the part as a layout model. I finished it in blue full yellow livery but can't recall much else about it now, especially how I tackled the transfers, other than I somehow managed with what was available at the time. I often wonder whether the multitude of models I completed during the 1970s and 1980s, either for myself and subsequently passed on, or following requests like this one, are still out there somewhere. One of the reasons I kept an eye on Hattons pre-owned listings, just in case. Needless to say it never happened......! 2

Cheers Darius Those joints are a b*gger, aren't they? When I get on to my MTK Park Royal (Cl.103) kit, I'm considering reinforcing those joints with small countersunk screws, tapped into the whitemetal ends. It should be possible to 'lose' the screw heads with filing and filler. I have now completed the pair of Southern Pride Eastern Region Car Transporters, and am well into an Anbrico GWR streamlined railcar - the chassis is operational, and I SHOULD now be embarking on the bodywork. There's a kit for the unique GWR 'Lambourn Car', to fit the Lima chassis, to follow. John Isherwood. Edited April 25 by cctransuk

So received wisdom - almost never at first-hand - would have us believe! I cannot speak for their loco kits, but the DMUs are eminently buildable and, for their time, quite acceptable 'layout' models. Perhaps your friend was only accustomed to Airfix kits?
