trainwizz
Recently picked up a second-hand Dapol N-gauge 57XX and on its first run, after a couple of minutes it started giving out smoke (from under the chassis, not the chinney!) and smells strongly of electrical burning. I took it off the track immediately but not sure not to do next. I'm just beginning to dip my toes into N-gauge model railways, but wondered whether anyone might have an idea of what's gone wrong? Could the motor have burnt out? I'm using a Gaugemaster model D controller on an oval of Peco track.
Les1952
A frequent culprit on smoking Dapols is the circuit board. Less likely to be the motor. Les
RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted April 25 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 25 I had a Dapol B1 when they were first introduced and was running it at about half speed on an oval of track when it started emitting "magic smoke" and a burning smell. I turned off the power. I later tried running it again — though not for a prolonged period — and it was fine. I came to the conclusion that some Dapol "super creep" motors don't like sustained running. However since yours was only running for a limited period it's unlikely to be the same cause. The B1 still works well, while a Farish B1 purchased at the same time has gone on to develop split gears. As a fan of LNER Pacifics, I suspect @Les1952 has much more relevant experience than me!
