signaller
Can anyone tell me why some slate wagons are this colour please? many thanks
Phil Traxson
It would appear that the wooden slate wagons were the same colour as the rest of the wooden wagons and vans on the FR, the steel ones were grey as were the other steel/iron wagons(iron coal wagons and horse dandies) Phil Traxson
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted August 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2010 I am not convinced they were that colour (for Dinorwic anyway) and wonder if its just a museum repaint from some point. All the photos I have indicate something more of a deep maroon. A battered example coupled up here http://bala-lake-rai.../p25563610.html Some empties on the carriers here http://www.narrow-ga...2535&cat_id=161 More from some of Ron Fishers pictures here; http://ronfisher.fot.../p41711778.html http://ronfisher.fot.../p41711722.html On here some appear grey but maybe just weathered wood with the paint long gone http://ronfisher.fot.../p41711723.html Hope thats of some use :-) Garry
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted August 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2010 For what its worth these are my Slaters 16mm ones I did a while back.
signaller
Well if that doesn't proove the value of these forums then nothing does! In 30 minutes I get some excellent answers. I have 6 to paint in 16mm scale. many thanks indeed.
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted August 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2010 My "maroon" was one of the Halfords spray paints, think it was the undercoat range. I was not happy with it at first but once weathered down I think it looks a bit better.
signaller
Looks like red oxide primer which I was tempted to use and I now shall. Yours look the business! I thought the pink didn't look right and only seen in museums it would appear. Cheers

I was not happy either with the side numbers at first as I hand painted them but I guess it adds to the rustic individuality of these wagons as no 2 were alike after leaving the workshops at new. Only about another 10 to do to go with the 16mm Hunslet when I eventually finish it
signaller
On another note I notice your wagons have two bars and mine has three, there is a reason I am sure? Is it down to makes or regions? Thanks again.

Have you the FR type https://slatersplast....php?code=16W04 Most slate railways had their own design and more often than not were built on or nearby the railway. Not sure which bars to which you are referring?

In which case you open another kettle of fish lol. FR had black, grey and maybe other colours as Phil said earlier. I have in front of me the latest NG&I magazine and it has drawings and an article on your wagon. Got it in front of me now if you would like me to search for any information? RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted August 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2010 I think I will copy yours for colour if you don't mind! Not at all, as long as when you finish it please post a picture up I have not seen these kits so interested to see what they are like as I have a 16mm FR England to do too that these might look good with. I think if you weather it enough then the uncertainty of the original colour is lost in the rust and grime

I will post a picture later. Did you ever finish your hunslet? mine is still on the back burner!
RMweb Gold Garry D100 Posted August 7, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2010 Did you ever finish your hunslet? mine is still on the back burner! No not yet, about halfway through at the moment. Because of alterations in the garden the power to my shed was cut earlier in the year. Hoping it will be reconnected soon and then I can get it finished, got the England and a De Winton to do yet plus another Hunslet. At this rate it will take me years lol.
