Slate wagons

It would appear that the wooden slate wagons were the same colour as the rest of the wooden wagons and vans on the FR, the steel ones were grey as were the other steel/iron wagons(iron coal wagons and horse dandies)

I am not convinced they were that colour (for Dinorwic anyway) and wonder if its just a museum repaint from some point.

All the photos I have indicate something more of a deep maroon.

A battered example coupled up here http://bala-lake-rai.../p25563610.html

Some empties on the carriers here http://www.narrow-ga...2535&cat_id=161

More from some of Ron Fishers pictures here;

On here some appear grey but maybe just weathered wood with the paint long gone

Hope thats of some use :-)

Looks like red oxide primer which I was tempted to use and I now shall. Yours look the business! I thought the pink didn't look right and only seen in museums it would appear.

Cheers

Yes thats it, Red Oxide, and thanks for your comments. biggrin.gif

I was not happy either with the side numbers at first as I hand painted them but I guess it adds to the rustic individuality of these wagons as no 2 were alike after leaving the workshops at new.

Only about another 10 to doblink.gif to go with the 16mm Hunslet when I eventually finish it rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

On another note I notice your wagons have two bars and mine has three, there is a reason I am sure?

Is it down to makes or regions?

Thanks again.

Are they off a different railway?

These were just built for the Dinorwic quarry in house at their workshops.

Have you the FR type https://slatersplast....php?code=16W04

Most slate railways had their own design and more often than not were built on or nearby the railway.

Not sure which bars to which you are referring?

thanks

Ah the early FR wooden types.

In which case you open another kettle of fish lol.

FR had black, grey and maybe other colours as Phil said earlier.

I have in front of me the latest NG&I magazine and it has drawings and an article on your wagon.

Got it in front of me now if you would like me to search for any information?

Yes I have it also but the pictures are black and white! well brown and white! Hence my initial question. I think I will copy yours for colour if you don't mind!

Not at all, as long as when you finish it please post a picture up wink.gif biggrin.gif

I have not seen these kits so interested to see what they are like as I have a 16mm FR England to do too that these might look good with.

I think if you weather it enough then the uncertainty of the original colour is lost in the rust and grime smile.gif

They are excellent value for money, I needed six so the price was important! very little flash and go together very easily. I will post a picture later.

Did you ever finish your hunslet? mine is still on the back burner!

No not yet, about halfway through at the moment.

Because of alterations in the garden the power to my shed was cut earlier in the year.

Hoping it will be reconnected soon and then I can get it finished, got the England and a De Winton to do yet plus another Hunslet.

At this rate it will take me years lol.

Thanks for posting the pictures, they look really good. Think I will get a couple to mix into my rake.

Interested also in the scene and building. Is that part of your layout? Looks interesting.

Oooh that looks rather good! Have I missed your layout thread? There are details there that warrant closer inspection.

You havn't missed it cause there isn't one! I could post some facts and figures so to speak, in a breif description, if you think it will be of some interest?
