Scottish 1980's parcel traffic

For the benefit of those without the gift of a photographic memory or cannot access that forum whilst I've taken it offline temporarily it would be helpful to expand on what your question actually was.

I did reply to the topic. I did say that I saw a pic of a 24 (or 26) hauling a 4W van of BR origins and a MK1 B(something)K.

Hi Claggy

There was a TPO service that ran until September 1988 at least with 4 TPO vans (not sure what types, i will try and look into that). The train originated from Aberdeen and ran down the East Coast to Dundee then across to Perth where it was stabled into a Bay Platform to be loaded before carrying on south to Glasgow. This part is sketchy as it changed quite a few times but when it got to the Glasgow area it ran i believe via Cumbernauld and Coatbridge to allow access to Polmadie where it was merged with the West Coast TPO to London. I have also heard of it running to Carstairs and being hooked up to the Edinburgh Mail coach and some mail coaches from Glasgow to trip down the West Coast Main Line.

Hope this helps and i will try and work out what TPO vans were used.

Hi Claggy

Bry's quite correct about this working. The 15:45 Ex. Aberdeen. In the early 1980s, it was usually hauled by a Class 26, and had 5-6 TPOs, then later it went to a 47. As noted, this was specifically Postal Traffic, as opposed to Parcels Traffic. (which was referred to as Mail Traffic internally within BR). This might be confusing.

There was an Aberdeen to Cardiff Parcels earlier in the afternoon (around 14:40 I think). Depending on the load it was worked by either a single Class 26/27 or 2x Class 26/27. It went via Cumbernauld-Coatbridge to Carlisle where a Class 82/84 tookover. Consist:- GUVs, BGs, CCTs, SPVs etc.

I worked both of these workings many times. I hope this is some help to you.

sorry i thought maybe tpo workings were what claggy was looking for, i didnt realise that scottish region actually had dedicated parcels trains i just presumed that the parcels went round in the bg's, brakes or dbso's on the service trains. Did any of the red star branded vans make it to scotland to be used on these services?

As well as Parcels traffic there was also newspaper traffic, although in the early days it was hard to distinguish between them, in later life a few vans were branded "newspapers". Perth used to seem be the hub of all van trains in Scotland in the 1960s/70s, and the station used to be packed with parcels vans of various origin. One of the highlights of the day at Caotbridge Central was the Perth to Manchester Red Bank van train, usually class 40 hauled and loading anything up to 20 bogies, the last of the mega trains!! Another interesting working was the legendary evening 1S81 20:50 Carlisle-Perth stopping service, the formation was normally two sparsely occupied Mk1 coaches, a postal sorting van (SX), and sundry parcels vans needing moved from Carlisle to Perth. In later days these vans were few and far between, and the combination of a driver keen to get off duty in charge of a 3000+ horsepower electric locomotive towing as little as two coaches could be the cue for some fast acceleration and high speeds to Mossend. Sadly this service ended on the eleventh of May 1985, with 86315 doing the honours from Carlisle to Mossend, and the affection held by enthusiasts for the train was marked by the specially arranged haulage of 20125 and 20209 from Mossend to Perth.

Although the Scottish region did not have any dedicated DMU parcels vehicles, three single car Gloucester R.C.& W. class 122's, no's SC55013-SC55015 were internally stripped for parcels traffic and reclassified as class 131, these ran in the easrly 1970s on verious internal services.

On the old forum I talked about 1S37 from Kings Cross to Aberdeen, the movement of the parcels vehicles back to Edinburgh on a normal service train and 1E18 back to Kings Cross.

As the thread stated parcels I didn't mention postal traffic. Until September 1988 Aberdeen had a postal service as mentioned above. This was 1A79 the 03.35 from Carstairs which split from 1S09 (not sure if that went to Glasgow or Inverness). The return from Aberdeen was 1C89 the 15.40 to Carstairs. In the 1982-83 Passenger Train Marshalling book it lists (Aberdeen end) POS, POS, POT, BPOT as the formation and from photos on fotopic I have found that this formation was still in use right up to the end of the service.

Aberdeen Kirkhill has a very nice representation of this service (shameless plug!icon_winker.gif )

Hi, first time using the newlook site so I hope this appears ok

I have seen reference to a mail/ newspaper train being the only service on the far north line to Lairg on Sundays during the 80's. Does anybody know how long this service lasted and if this service operated on any other days

Thanks in advance

Hi folks,

One of my favourites during my spotting days at Dundee was 4A40 11:10 Edinburgh-Aberdeen parcels via Perth. This train would consist of all sorts of bogied and 4-wheeled vans (normally class 40 hauled). Here are a few formations noted at Dundee which include ex-Southern and LMS bogie or 4-wheelers:

10-01-1981: 40023 + M31035+M86981+M80751+W86700+S383+W86256+W86611+W86411

20-01-1981: 40101 + S249+M30967+M86890+M86928+W86611+M94103+E94664+W96612

02-02-1981: 40065 + S383+W86153+M31326+E94619

04-02-1981: 40149 + E86899+M81501+E86791+M86541+W86618+M94442+W86376+S363+S1859

14-03-1981: 47053 + W86612+M81536+M86968+E86090+E80838+W94377+M31112+S94724+W86185+M80857+S369

21-03-1981: 40173 + S242+M31281+M86808+M80964+W86634+E80912+M86559+W86605+S228+S220+M80750+M80557

I never did see (or know of) a return working with the empties although a mid-afternoon passenger train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh (1G64 14:40 Aberdeen-Edinburgh) did convey a few bogied or 4-wheeled which could be part of the stock from a previous 4A40 working eg

03-02-1981 46046 + SC1850+SC13418+SC5091+SC5112+SC5096+SC5203+M80613+E86129+S2099
