Making it Spark!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Firstly I have uploaded an avatar for our Group very NLL- an Oerlikon in Black and White on my layout - however happy to change if any of you can have other ideas - please ensure that anything you suggest is not subject to copyright.

I am still getting used to managing a Group and I am not familiar with all the functions or limitations yet so I might get things wrong - please PM me if I do!

Suggests on how we structure mange this Group most welcome. My view is that this should become a repository/atlas of content about the North & west London DC Lines. I have already had 2 suggestions

1.That we include the Underground the rationale is that the North and West London lines either share stations or stations and tracks with LU services. Whilst this is a very valid point I think the sheer size of the Underground and potential subject matter could overwhelm us and we could lose focus of our core subjects.

2. That we increase our scope to include the Goblin line - Gospel Oak - Barking - Whilst it is not a DC line it is a part of the NLL/Overground and is relatively small so I suggest we include it.

3, The Overground soon to be effectively the Outer Circle a vision that was first mooted @ 90 years ago. Do we include the whole line in our scope?

Looking forward to your inputs, suggestions and constructive criticisms.

Xerces Fobe

The Gob is an interesting add-on, as it apes the NLL in running across lots of other railways. In my yoof it ran from Kentish Town, but BedPan killed that, and no doubt in the dim and distant it started from St Pancras, and ran to Tilbury etc. I certainly vote for that one to join, not least because it doesn't easily fall into any other likely Group.

LUL is huge and deserves a Group to itself. Not for us except on the overlapping routes and stations, in my view.

The Outer Circle is difficult, because some of the places South of the River could be the subject of all sorts of discussion. As usual, it's simply a question of whether this Group chooses to live in the present or the past! I would say not for this Group.

I would suggest:

Not including the Underground except for where it's directly relevant (i.e. the north end of the Bakerloo sharing with the DC lines, or the District sharing the NLL to Richmond), I agree with Ian that the Underground is a big enough subject to deserve it's own group and neither side of that would really benefit by lumping it under here.

Including the GOBLin, as operationally it's been linked at least since sectorisation, has shared stock with the WLL at times, has been part of the same franchise since privatisation and forms part of the same London orbital freight network.

Ref the modern outer circle, we'd be covering the modern-day ELL to just before Shoreditch anyway as it's the old line to Broad St, and the line to Clapham is likewise already included, but going any further theoretically also brings in places like Crystal Palace (lovely, fascinating, but well outside the original aim of the group!) and Croydon!

So - two suggestions - either to place an arbitrary limit on the modern day ELL (maybe just past the new Shoreditch station, anything south of that point being outside our remit?) The benefit is that should be an easy to understand distinction, a disbenefit that it might make talk of the modern network and it's developments harder to include, especially as we've potentially got trains coming that will be "on topic" at either end of their route but not in the middle!

Or, we include the line to Broad St/Clapham Jcn in a historical sense and limit the group to that and the others agreed to, but we allow talk of all modern Overground operations with the caveat that we keep the history of the Southern/ELL infrastructure off-limits? That's maybe a harder distinction to get ones head around, but does allow talk of the modern network as a whole?

I wouldn't include lines to Moorgate (via either route!) as they weren't particularly part of the same thing even though there are plenty of connections/interfaces etc...

Hi we could include essex rd old street moorgate as the 313s ran there ... in the mid 70s 80s etc.. just a thought

I think we should stick to our core area at first and see how it develops the only real link with the Moorgate branch is the Class 313's so we might have to add Kings X next :wild:

Thanks for the suggestion.

  • 7 months later...

As with some of the other specialist Interest sub forums it appears that the North & West London DC & GOB Lines Forum is suffering from voltage drop!

I would hope that we can all find content to add to our sub forum maybe more info on the NLL as it is today as it has been a time of great change for the better many after years of neglect.

There are still lots of gaps in information from the past that hopefully we can fill over time. For example has anyone got details and photos of the rail tour of 2X 4TC and I assume either Class 33 or 73 that visited Broad Street in the 1970? There is a small amount of video of this tour at Broad Street however it does not show the locomotives that hauled/pushed the train.

How about compiling details of every station on the NLL in including historic and modern photos?

As for modelling – modular NLL layout say in 2mm, yes Broadtrains1979 2mm, where each of us build a module that is of a specific NLL station and even exhibit it!

Enough of my ramblings over to you for your ideas

Nigel.
