johnw1
On this day in History – Loughborough – 22nd May 1974 A push bike ride to Loughborough and a day watching the traffic. 08471, 20040/44/84, 20158, 25033, 25120, 25212/45/64, 25325, 31237, 44002/03/05/10, (class 45) 45/60/63/88/95/97, 100/04/09/10/30/36, 45003, 45105/07/14/21/25, 46015/28, 47135, 47200/48, 47336, 47454, (class 53) 1200 Of note are 08471 which would have been part of a freight train consist making its way to/from Derby works, no road transport in those days and 1200 Falcon, the Brush prototype engine sitting in the yard at Loughborough, had British Rail forgotten that in the 1970’s and 1980’s there was no rail connection into the Brush works? It had returned to the Western Region on my next visit six days later. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. johnw1
On this day in History - Toton – 24th May 1969. It’s a Saturday morning so its out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton to see what was about. Class 08 (3056/59, 3174, 3362/63, 3400/04, 3996, 4145), class 20 (8013/47/59/62/69/91, 8136/39/40/43/44/47/49/54/55/58/70/73/78/81/83/87/88/92), class 25 (7524), class 37 (6814, 6939), class 44 (1/5/9/10), class 45 (21/33/39/45/47/56/62/64/91, 101/03/05/06), class 47 (1628, 1701, 1823/24/25/29). Of note is the virtual lack of type 2 power, very strange and class 08’s, 3174 and 4145 which were not locals (3174 was I think at this time a Holyhead engine and 4145 was a Longsight engine) and I assume were on transfer to/from Derby works. In those days class 08’s were transferred between sheds and works usually via class 8 or 9 freight trains which abounded and who’s speed was slow enough not to be an issue. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. Locomotives of note were Derby allocated class 03’s 2130, 2381 and 2388 which would all be withdrawn in the following three months (August, June and July respectively) and two (2130, 2388) would cease to exist within ten months being broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham in March 1973, 2381 survives today in preservation at Carnforth A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. johnw1
On this Day in History - Colwick – 1st June 1969 In the latter half of the 1960’s I used to cycle out from Clifton to the large Great Northern Railway MPD on the eastern outskirts of Nottingham at Colwick (16B). By this time its once large allocation was down to a few diesel shunters with its main line fleet being provided almost exclusively by Toton and I still have the log for my final visit on the 1st June 1969 shortly before its closure. Following closure the locomotives were then fuelled at Nottingham and stabled in and around the carriage sidings and London Road Parcels depot. On shed on this final vist were: Class 08 (3403/07/25/26, 3790), class 20 (8013/16/40/61/63/65/67, 8137/39/41/58/60/62/68/70/74/78/84/91/93/96/97/98), class 31 (5629) and class 47 (1808). It’s a sign of the scale of the decline of the coal traffic around Nottingham that in 1969 the local collieries (Linby, Annesley, Newstead, Hucknall, Babbington, Calverton, Gedling and Cotgrave, plus Staythorpe power station could provide employment for eleven pairs of class 20’s and one class 47. All these pits and the power station have all closed since 1969. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. waggy
On this Day in History – Lancashire and Cheshire – 10th June 1973 Hi John, Thanks for posting, i always enjoy reading your articles. I went on quite a lot of coach trips in the early 70's mainly with the Dalescroft Railfans Club, i think they were based in Bradford and was run by Dale W Fickes, my most memorable one been in 1971 starting with a trip round the London sheds then a week on a Western Region Railrover. I must dig my notes out of the loft and start posting some of them. Thanks again. Regards. Graham

buckdancer
Marvellous shed SPM. Never had any trouble getting around it although the local rumour was they got you to spend 3 or 4 hours cleaning engines if they caught you. It was even more interesting when Bath Rd closed to steam as it saved you doing that shed too.

mikemeg
In this week in history - Second Week of June 1966 As the title says, not a day in history but a Sunday afternoon in the second week of June in 1966. On that day I made my final visit to Hull Dairycoates, our local loco shed and a place I had bunked round hundreds of times. This was to be the last time I ever went round one of these incredible places. There was not a lot of steam around, a few Austerities and the odd standard plus some oddities like a J27 and a 4MT tank. But the K3's, the J25's and J39's, the J71's, J72's and J94's, the V3's and most of the B1's had all gone. By this time locos were being moved around all over the place as they eked out their last days prior to withdrawal, hence the oddities. The largest collection of locos was the scrap line in Dairycoates Seven Section up by the ash pits, awaiting their last journey to Drapers Scrapyard in Hull. I had made my final spotting trip in mid 1965, to Scotland; there to see some of the remaining A4's and the last of the Scottish A2's which, apart from works visits, rarely came south of Edinburgh. So, on that day in 1966, I really did put away the notebooks and the copies of the Ian Allan Combined Volumes which I had lovingly cherished from 1958 onwards. When I began spotting there must have been around 17,000 steam locos on British Railways, possibly more; I don't know how many were left by June 1966 but a much smaller number. But for me and thousands like me the interest had gone; it would never be the same ever again. So I took a last long lingering look at Hull Dairycoates shed - 50B -, this great cathedral of a place, dedicated to the steam locomotive. Yet this was one of literally dozens of similar places which I had visited over the preceding eight years. Within just over a year, steam would disappear completely from this shed and within two or three more years the shed would close completely. I could still remember the first day I ever saw this place - a Sunday in October 1958 - when it was crammed with locomotives; well over a hundred spread around the four tunrntables and the remains of the straight shed. So many memories, many of which live to this day. But above all were the memories of those great sheds. Dark they were, filthy they were, more often than not they were just downright decrepid but they were quite simply magical places and never more so than on those 'Steam Day Sunday Afternoons' when most of the locos had the day off. pH
Mike, what decided you to stop then, when there was still over 2 years of BR steam still to go? That's when I stopped - one last trip round Lancashire and a final visit to Barry in September 1968 and that was it. And I've seen someone else on here say that they gave up in March or April 1968, fed up with all the hoopla around the coming end of steam. But in 1966 you weren't even too far away from working steam in the Northeast.
mikemeg
Mike, what decided you to stop then, when there was still over 2 years of BR steam still to go? That's when I stopped - one last trip round Lancashire and a final visit to Barry in September 1968 and that was it. And I've seen someone else on here say that they gave up in March or April 1968, fed up with all the hoopla around the coming end of steam. But in 1966 you weren't even too far away from working steam in the Northeast. I guess there were other things to do, not least A-levels. Yes there was still steam at work in a number of places but those that were left by mid 1966 were, for the most part, in a sorry state. I'd done most of the sheds in the Northeast in 1961 and 62, when the J26's, J27's, Q6's and Q7's were still intact classes and when those sheds were still vibrant, working places. No, I'm glad that I gave up before the end of steam; that would have been too depressing. So my abiding memories, apart from those wonderful sheds, are of summer days on York and Doncaster Stations in the late 1950's or the first time I ever saw GWR locomotives at Paddington in 1959 and many many more. Of course that inimitable smell, the smell of oily, smoky steam can still be experienced as can the thrill of seeing one of these living, breathing machines. This on the heritage lines up and down the country. And seeing an A4, a 'streak', pristine, lovingly maintained still evokes an enormous thrill, just as it did fifty odd years ago. Cheers Mike
