Peterborough Festival of Model Railways

Unfortunately some of us no longer have local model shops

I'll wait till I see the likes of Signal Box at Warley or Peterborough and see if there's anything going at an interesting price

Two comments and we wonder why there are no local model shops

In fairness , you've rather selectively quoted and missed what I was actually saying

I used to have a local model shop , and when I did I supported him , and even paid a little over the odds for stuff. And - going back to the previous comments about traders - he used to have a stand at several of the local shows. I bought a Bachmann 20 off him at a show one year- but I wouldn't have expected him to offer prices lower than he offered in the shop just cos he'd gone to a show.

When he closed , that ceased to be an option

The point I was actually making was a little different -

you are left with credit card over the phone or through a website... occasional horror stories about security breaches. Having had to change all my bank accounts after some unauthorised transactions ..... after I used a credit card ..... on line, I'll wait till I see the likes of Signal Box at Warley or Peterborough

ie I'm not prepared to buy through a website or give card details over the phone because I and others have had our cards and bank accounts compromised by doing so. Since you can no longer pay for mail order with a cheque, and the nearest model shop is now 15 miles away from me, it's useful to see some of the box shifters at a show . I don't care if their prices are no cheaper than on their website or in the magazine ads - if I buy at a show , my card won't be done, and it's about the only safe convenient way I have of buying RTR (Giving card details over the phone to a specialist trader in person is a different story - I'm happy to trust someone like Charlie Petty)

Now you can no longer pay for mail order RTR by a safe secure means, buying mail order is much more problematic than it was - and as a result I won't be complaining about the presence of boxshifters and other traders at exhibitions (It's also true I'm not buying much RTR at present, and what bits I have bought haven't really been essential - so it doesn't matter very much if I don't buy at all)

Thank for that! Charlie Petty of DC Kits - devideos.co.uk.

My view is that you should support your local shows too, I know some of the 'local' traders are not as cheap as Hattons but you can see what you are buying, inspect it and have a day out too. Far more fun than internet shopping!

So come to Leeds next weekend and support you local show, Sunday is the best day and the school does a cracking breakfast!!!! Charlie

I can't get that link or any variations to work. is it just me?

No neither can I. It gives a blank page, but the address bar is showing an HTTPS link, which would sem to indicate a secure site of sorts.??

Worked okay for me, nice photos. Looks like worth visiting.

Reminds me of when I was at the Britsol MRex in MAy this year. In OZ (Australia) we don't have many UK layouts, suppliers and paraphernalia in one place, not even our exhibitions, they tend to have lots of Aussie stuff.

Must get back sometime to do another.

Worked OK for me but I was faced with a large area of white blank page at the top and had to scroll down a bit to find the exhibition report. Good to see the shots of our club layout Farkham - but that was also featured in the last issue of BRM as well to help publicise the show

York at Easter is a large specialist show with lots of specialist traders.

I'd just like to add my impressions of the show on Saturday afternoon - however I was primarily looking at the suppliers side of things, so I didn't really notice alot of the layouts.

1) I had a couple of bags with me, that I would have liked to have left in a secure place - yet talking to the ticket staff there was no cloakroom this year.

2) There were a lot of big traders there, but the ones I looked at either didn't offer the ranges of products that I was seeking, and the ones I did investigate further were did satisfy my curiosity, either by having that I purchased or having a website. I would also like to point out that both Hornby and Bachmann/Graham Farish had displays there, but it was only Hornby that seemed to have their display manned all day.

3) The smaller / specialist traders seemed to be far more interesting to me, to the point that I had a chat with three of them mainly on the subject of buildings.

4) The quality of layouts was variable, as I have said I wasn't there to look at the layouts, but the ones I mention are the ones I can remember, going from the (IMO) poor through to the excellent (The 2mm Welsh one), I did notice Uppingham at the time that services had been suspended and I had a look at the scenery, I also had a look at the Scottish N guage one in the same row as Uppingham. I wasn't really taken by most of the layouts in the main hall, but I did look at the layout in a shed and I did notice the group of three in the same pound, mainly because they were of an achievable size and standard - and they have inspired me.

The only layout that I thought was of a poor standard was an N guage, East Midlands set one with the concrete plant and various rakes tail chasing. I don't know how old it is, but I have seen it in the press, and at another show possibly last year or the year before.

Overall I was not greatly taken with the show as a whole, I would say that it is style over substance.

I think I will have to put York on the to do list when I next visit. The list of suppliers/retailers looks good, so definitely worth a visit. That means it will have to be easter again when we (wife & I) go. I will just have to wait and see what transpires.
