Gordon A
Jessie has arrived at Bitton on hire from the Llangollen Railway, and is due to stay until September. I had the pleasure of driving her last Sunday. Jessie was built in 1937 and spent all her working life at Eastmoor Steelworks, Cardiff, where she was withdrawn in 1965. One thing that puzzles me is what is the reason for the lamp bracket on the drivers side of the bunker? There is not another one on the firemans side. I found out what the hand rails running along the underneath of each side of the water tank were for. I tried going underneath to oil the valve gear etc and could not squeeze between the rods so ended up going in over the top of the running plate and sitting between the frames. At least it gave me some shelter from the rain, and gave my fireman a laugh. Jessie at Bitton waiting to depart for Oldland. Between the frames Slide bars - four to each piston. Reverser counterbalance and valve gear. Boiler backhead Jessie at Avon Riverside waiting to depart to Bitton.
RMweb Gold tomparryharry Posted July 25, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2011 Not sure about the smaller Hunslets, but if you park the loco with the Drivers side wheels on the back quarter (9 o'clock), you should be able to oil all the eccentrics & drivers big end from between the frames. The firemans big end can be done fron the running plate, as it should be on top centre. Regards, Ian
Arthur
Nice photos Gordon. There's a photo in the book East Moors album, taken in 1967, of Jessie being handed over to Cardiff Council. That lamp iron is there so it's clearly a steelworks fitting. I've a works photo of a Yorkshire 0-6-0ST built for the Lancashire Steel Corporation which has a lamp iron fitted on the corner of the drivers side rear spectacle plate, just above the bunker. It would seem they're positioned for ready access from the cab, maybe to enable a direction of movement light to be changed?

br2975
There's a photo in the book East Moors album, taken in 1967, of Jessie being handed over to Cardiff Council. 'Jessie' was stuffed and mounted, on a plinth in Splott Park, Cardiff (opposite the entrance to Tidal Sidings) for many years after her withdrawal from East Moors. It's good to see her 'alive' - personally, I can live with the bunker, after all industrial locos acquired all sorts of mods and adjustments over their lives. Gordon A
Thanks for the comments folks. Trev - We have RSH 7151 ex Hams Hall Power Station (Birmingham) No 9, if that is of any help. Ian - Thanks for the advice. I will have a look on August 29th when I believe I may be driving her again ( or RSH 7151). My problem appears to be having a large rib cage that wont fit between the various rods. Gordon A Bristol
