steve fay
Its been a while since I tackled any thing like this and its the first project Ive done in OO in a few years. The loco and body where picked up on ebay for £10, The class 90 motor bogie dummy bogie flush glazing followed. I sourced some underframe parts from the Heljan class 86 cut off the molded underframe and replaced Ive also replaced the insulators on the roof with Heljan ones. Hornby panto placed for pictures. Next job is to add the etches from the Jim Smith wright stable and order some A1 buffers. The loco is in the correct livery but I will respray the yellow ends as the Hornby yellow is totally wrong. Buffer beam details etched name plates, hurst brecknill willis pantograph and transfers to complete. Ive decided to give the driver an open window. I am also working on a Hornby/ lima class 87 and a Hornby MK3 DVT to the correct as new look. pictures will follow.
dave_long
Did you try using the Heljan spares bogie sideframes instead of the 90 side frames?
steve fay
No 86101 along with 102 and 103 where the test beds for the class 87 and had 87 /90 bogies Thats why I chose this prototype as I have a Heljan class 86 thats being backdated slightly. dave_long
Silly me. I hadn't clocked the title and that it was 101 you were doing. I have the full set of hj spares its good to know they look good under a Hornby body. Dave
Guest jim s-w
Hi Steve Some of the under frame equipment on the 86/1's is the same as an 87. I'll dig out some pics of 86101 for you Cheers Jim
steve fay
Fitted the J S W etches today, This has really enhanced the front end. I've used the multiple working blanking panels on the front of the 87. I have tried to replicate the 87 under floor gear on the 861 series as well. Not quite sure if I'm happy with it yet though. I might try and source an 87 chassis of eBay. If any one is interested I've got a set of flush glazing enough for one 86 and the under floor etches from the J S W etches left over as I've used the Heljan under frame equipment. Perfect for an earlier version. I've added the Heljan roof aerials to the 87 and the associated wiring although I might change the aerials to some shawplan ones. Jim any pictures would be welcome. I have quite a few but the more the better and the etches are superb cheers

kevpeo
Hi Steve. Those etchings do look nice. I think when I did my 86 101 I used mostly 87 underframe details and just added the relevent bits from an 86. Its probably as broad as its long though! Keep the photo's coming, kev. steve fay
Hi I havent done much to the AC fleet for a while but I have been messing about with the other end of the train the Hornby MK3 DVT. I need to send off for some buffers and warning yellow paint. I really hope I can get a front skirt for the DVT as I think they looked so much better with them in place. steve fay
Sorry Chaps the local planning office scuppered my plans for my railway room. Or at least I had to apply for planning permission. So Im only concentrating on my O gauge projects for the foreseeable future.
