Tim Hale
Sherborne's new signal box, a Type 16 opened in 1960 and taken out of service in 1970, is no more. The contractors completed its demolition today - I felt it inappropriate to submit a picture of an empty space but it is sad. Hopefully, one day, the line will be doubled when Dawlish closes and the South West mainline returns to its proper status as the premier route to the South west. Tim Expect more of this - NR does have a specific policy of demolishing such redundant buildings (Crewkerne next ??) - also witness many of the concrete PW huts which are simply smashed down. The WOE line is being re-signalling and will be controlled from Basingstoke so ALL the boxes between Salisbury and Honiton will be fair game soon.
