'County Hall' or 'The 15 That Got Away'.

I particularly like GWR and WR 4-6-0s but there are never enough so I extend my interest to projects that were not built.

In Backtrack volume 14 number 4 of April 2000 there is mention of GWR Lot 359 for 15-off Hall class with County boiler. The author of the article suggests they were sanctioned but later cancelled.

Other Swindon Lot numbers for GWR locomotive production about this time were:

Over the years I have bought too many Dapol/ Hornby Counties and Replica/ Bachmann Modified Halls but am loathe to part with any - buying is much easier than selling but 'pack-rat-itis' has set in.

Just for fun, I sawed up two loco's and put a Dapol 'County' class boiler onto a Replica Railways 'Modified Hall' running plate and chassis. It is not glued together yet and the shade of green varies.

Some pictures of it in case anyone else shares a similar interest.

Regarding the picture brightness - my screen is set dark for night time use so if pictures are too dark or too light for general viewing I will resubmit them. Some feedback regarding this would be helpful.

In 1941 there was a similar proposal to fit an 8F boiler onto a Hall chassis so I am looking for a donor of a recent Hornby 8F body to saw up.

A very interesting project. These might have Beens can add something a bit extra to any layout.

That boiler looks just right.

I've seen in a few books before the county came out the initial plans for a high running frame (black 5 chassis with out side valve gear) county boiler

Plate frame bogie hawksworth tender.

That would make an interesting model. GW looks with maintenance friendly accessibility.

I was intersted to read and see what a great job you'd done on the two loco's - an unusual concept. Congratulations!

I think it was in 1949, that Fred Hawksworth was proposing to fit a 'Merchant Navy' boiler to a 'King', having digested the MN boiler output data from the 1948 Interchange Trials. Now there's a modelling challenge!

Thanks for the snippet about the Merchant Navy boiler. I heard it mentioned before but assumed it was a likely boiler for a GWR pacific.

There are several models around based on a variation of an LMS Princess chassis with King engine powered by a Duchess boiler. I thought of building one of these but when heard about the GWR's liking for a Merchany Navy boiler, I digressed to building a GWR pacific with an MN boiler and using a Hornby MN rewheeled with spokes instead.

The MN and its boiler look shorter than a Duchess/ Princess derived setup and could be made to work. The main problem with all these big loco's is that they are nudging the limits of the loading gauge, especially with a GWR safety valve bonnet atop. This can be seen on the 4700 class with number 7 boiler which has a unique, very short chimney. The Southern Railway used a stepped down or smaller smokebox that was the same size as the actual boiler. The GWR and LMS tended to have a hoop on the small end of the boiler barrel so the smokebox could be the same size as the cleading (cladding) over the asbestos lagging.

I am building up a folder on my PC of useful bits that might be incorporated into a fictitious GWR pacific model with an MN boiler. The chances of picking up a Hornby MN cheaply on ebay are a daydream.
