uglykidjoe
Hope this is in the correct forum as its overseas too... As a regular visitor to Spain and user of the Velez-Malaga Tram it was sad to here about this http://www.euroweeklynews.com/2011101389662/news/axarqu%C3%ADa-m%C3%A1laga-east/velez-malaga-town-hall-stops-tram-service.html One section has never been used and has cars parked on the track with weeds growing out of it. Edwin_m
It says the same people will be driving buses at the same times as the trams ran previously. Since trams are usually cheaper to run than buses (excluding any payment of capital, which is a sunk cost anyway) I'm not entirely sure how this saves them any money! Steve Steve. Is it not more a sign that Spain is going down the toilet regards the country's financial problems. Mac.

There seems more to this actually, spoke to my parents who live not too far way from Velez-Malaga, there are some elections taking place for the Councils and Junta 1st November Steve
uglykidjoe
Just found this picture taken April earlier this year. It shows the start of the yet to be be opened section just beyond the current terminus.
uglykidjoe
Well this service was finally suspended on the 4th of June, the section in the above photo has never been used.
Edwin_m
Wanna buya tram? Reduce the Spanish national debt by a couple of million? Actually they're probably leased from someone already.
uglykidjoe
I understand the they belong to a company in the Arriva group. The council has assured 'everyone' that the three trams are to be retained and mothballed. If the unused section had been opened it could have made the project more viable anyway. uglykidjoe
I understand that there is now a suggestion to sell the trams to Australia as CAF have won a contract to supply new trams to Melbourne. The proceeds could then be used to buy 'more suitable' trams for Velez-Malaga.

SNCF stephen
Parry People Movers? I don't suppose Melbourne could be persuaded to buy the spare Edinburgh trams? Some parts of the Edinburgh Trams are actually on loan to other systems at the moment...
uglykidjoe
I was able to return to the area over the last week - fortunately there does not appear to be any parts removed/stolen so far. The signals and departure are switched off. I also got to see the replacement bus service which actually calls at the bus station too, perhaps the tram should have done that too. There was one tram outside the depot covered in tarpaulin - if I remember there was a spare tram anyway. Sorry no picture this time Steve [Here is an article in the local press regarding the current state http://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2013/01/12/velez-malaga-tram-back-on-track/ ]
