Lamps and dummy screw couplings

Recommended Posts

Can the more experienced members on this forum advise me which dummy screw couplings and lamps they feel would be good to use to detail my motley collection of traing, old Hornby, new Hornby and Bachmann DC steam locos. Would you recommend the made up dummy screw couplings over the DIY?

Are jewelled lights superior?

TIA.

A lot of modern locos come with very fine screw couplings. Exactoscale http://www.exactoscale.co.uk/products.html and Smiths http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Smiths_couplings_for__OO_.html do them to name just two. Shirescenes have nice dummy couplings http://www.dartcastings.co.uk/shire/S35.php

The question is where to use them. For tender locos I often put dummy screw link couplings on the front buffer beam. On tank engines, and tender locos that will shunt, auto couplers are required on both buffer beams.

For lamps, Springside do very good whitemetal items with jewels http://www.springsidemodels.com/id17.htm. Bachmann do nice ones in plastic but these are on the large side. To attach to the loco drill either the bottom or back of the lamp and glue to the lamp iron. A word of warning, the jewel in the Springside lamp is not held in very well and will probably come out when you drill. If you want lamps that actually light, check out DCC Concepts.

You didn't mention vac/steam pipes. I like the Romford/Markits wire wound product. They come pre-shaped for the vertical stand pipe but can be cut and bent to represent other types.
