Treamble/Gravel Hill branch left the GWR Chacewater - Newquay line at Shepherds station and had its origins in the Cornwall Mineral Railway.

"Railways & Byways of Cornwall" John Vaughan, OPC 2002.

"The Newquay Branch and its Branches" John Vaughan, OPC1991.

Probably also something in the relevant Middleton Press book for the area, but I don't have a copy of that to check.

Yes, it was freight only.

Just had a look in my Middleton Press 'West Cornwall Mineral Railway's' It's got a couple of pages of info including a few pictures of a pannier tank on the line. It originally served iron mines and closed in 1917. It was relaid and reopened in 1926 to serve quarries and a gunpowder factory, closing in 1952. Although freight only a few trains were run during WW2 to take personnel to camps in the area. Around the terminus at Treamble there was once a network of narrow gauge tramways to various mines.
