dibber25
Thought some of these might be of interest. Starting with a couple of interior views of a Budd RDC CHRIS LEIGH
dibber25
There's always an old tank car in the siding at Parksville. I suspect it is a water tank, replacing the wooden water tank which used to be kept for fire-fighting purposes but is now an 'ornament' moved to the station entrance. RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted January 26, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2012 Its a shame the Via rail services have been suspended due to poor track. it was a great trip.
dibber25
A couple more digital shots. The rest will have to wait till I can scan the prints. This was a GOOD stretch of track taken about 4 years ago when the limit was still 40mph The Dayliner coming into Cobble Hill northbound. Parksville station. The green was not well liked but I thought it was Ok. Better now its back in CPR red/brown, though.
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted January 26, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2012 Here are a few photos I took back in 1992 on a trip to the Island. Ian
gridwatcher
Had a great time there back in 2005. Cab rode the Budd all the way from Victoria to the end of the line. The freight was still playing around half way up the line with Railink. Everyone was totally welcoming and the Railcar was a revelation in terms of comfort. We hit a log lying across the line in the Budd. I nearly fainted when I saw it coming up? The driver never blinked. Just smashed his way though it! dibber25
At Ladysmith the Comox Logging Co line crossed the E&N with a flat crossing, to its yard and then an inclined connection down to the log dump. A few bits of CL equipment remain outside the company's old shed. Once there was a really good little museum here but the town got rid of it - scrapped or dispersed the exhibits and takes no care of the few bits it has left. A couple of years before I took these pictures there were two or three freight cars there but these, too, have now gone. What's left is a flanger, Comox No. 11 a still restorable steam loco and the Humdurgin - a unique survivor, built on the chassis of a Shay locomotive as a log unloader - the big arm simply pushed the logs off into the water. dibber25
With only a handfull of customers left on the island there's a certain monony to the types of freightcar in Wellcox Yard - LPG tanks, grain hoppers, hoppers for sillicates. However, the origins of some of the cars can still be interesting.
steve1
Wonderful stuff! Many thanks for those. I've been to the Island twice and consider it one of the most wonderful places on the planet. We rode the Budd to the end of the line and back. When the gripper saw me taking pics he let me sit in the back cab and phot from there. steve
