jazz
Having been introduced to the tremendous quality of Flieschmann, Roco & Brawa products, notwithstanding a recent trip to the beautiful Bavarian mountains, it was a no brainer to model a layout with a Bavarian theme. This is not intended to be a particular area of Bavaria and is entirely freelance. I have set the epoch at 2/3 allowing a good variety of steam power. The baseboards and track were made and laid over the mild Christmas period. It is all wired up as far as running is concerned but has a long ways to go for the signaling, building lights and street/station lighting. Then cold weather stopped all activity in the garage so I have been concentrating on gathering locos and stock. Plus buildings/scenery ect. Between my 7mm commitments work is progressing slowly. Here are a few photos of the project so far. Overall shot of the station. The layout in 18' long plus a 4' fiddle yard. My growing stock of motive power. This is the Metcalf Main Station building kit, much modified and now low relief. A scratch built viaduct from Slater's plastikard. This is to be over the water fall and stream as the trains emerge from the mountain hidding the fiddle yard. A lovely little building. The goods shed just off the station. I guess you will see why I chose this as a place name for the layout. A selection of some of the buildings for the town centre. Finally, using the leftovers from the Main Station kit, another, much modified, building for the station area.
eastwestdivide
I guess you will see why I chose this as a place name for the layout. I might be being thick, but why that name? love the OTT gable ends on those buildings! Almost matching the profile of the coaches in the first shot. jazz
Hi EastWestDivide, on the the Railways of Germany Forum I asked for suggestions for a name of the layout. There were a few good ones to choose from. The helpful guy who came up with Makenbach thoughts were, my name Ken Mason = Maken. The viaduct crossing the river = bach. Bach in welsh (not forgetting I live in Llandudno) = little. (Not sure if he knew that, but is an added bonus.) The OTT ornate buildings is something I adore over there. I saw a huge town hall in Bavaria which every square in was painted in 3D complete with ladies looking over the balconies, pillars and all kinds of ornate mouldings, which was hard to tell which were painted and which were actual from certain angles. Just stunning. Here are the photos of that town hall for those who enjoyed the buildings as much as I did.
jukebox
Is that Rothenberg, Ken?
Allegheny1600
Hi Ken, Ooh! German quality - you can't beat it! Nice to see another German modeller on here and thanks for the lovely photos! Cheers, John E.
jazz
Now i'm emarrased to say, I cannot remember. We visited so many places I should have made notes. Here is a clue, it's on the Danube and I think it was Ulm.

jukebox
Now i'm emarrased to say, I cannot remember. We visited so many places I should have made notes. Here is a clue, it's on the Danube and I think it was Ulm. That's okay - having driven around there myself, there as so many villages with beautiful town squares, it does start to tax the memory! I just thought the clock in particular seemed familiar... but Rothenberg isn't on the Danube, so that rules it out.
jazz
The exceptionally warm and sunny weather has encouraged me to do a little more work on Makenbach. The platforms have had the stone sets and edging laid. Station lighting added and populated. (Paint 70 HO figures was more than a little tedious.) The next job, when the weather permits, will be covering the back scenes from the old 7mm layout with mounting board. Covering that with pale blue paper and air brushing on clouds. Then building up the mountains, embankments and retaining walls. This is it so far.
buffalo
Looks like good progress with the platforms, Ken. Mind you, that does look a rather substantial train for the little glaskasten to be pulling, or is it just meant to be the first two coaches? jazz
Hi Nick. Quite right, that would expecting a bit much of such a diminutive loco. A much larger loco had brought the train in and the two rear coaches detached for the onward journey up the short branch to the spa resort.
jazz
A little more progress due to the lovely mild weather the past few days. The viaduct is now installed and the first 6' of scenery is well under way. Back scenes and track ballasting not yet done. A bit more touching up on the rock faces and the scenic water fall to be added with the tourists admiring the fall and river below the viaduct. glo41f
Just caught up with this. The pictures are of Ulm. My daughter lived there for a while and it is indeed a lovely place. She has moved now to Swabia and tells me there is narrow guage stuff near her new home which I hope to see on next visit. Your models look very good. jazz
Thanks Martin. I had remembered it was Ulm. Along with Neuschwastein Castle, it was the most lovely place we visited on a wonderful trip. Just wating for another mild spell for more work on the next 6' of scenery.
jazz
A little more work on Makenbach. The 'old town' on the raised section is almost complete. Good use made of the excellent Faller, Volmer range of buildings. I would like to scource a backdrop of an old German town. This could be difficult as the buildings are slap against the backdrop. So some thought is going to be need on that. The old town.
jazz
Progress is very slow so far. (Busy on clients 7mm kits) However, I have mulling over what to do with the garage wall buttress intruding into the layout. I then found inexpesive but basic card buildings kits (They are 'and7barton' on ebay) I rwalised their castle kit could be adapted to go round the buttress. I have just glued it in place and is now awaiting blending in. I intend using roof top pictures behind the walls and adding trees to the tower area both behind the wall by the tower and either side of it on the railway side. A bit of moss on the walls here and there should make things look quite good, I hope. The castle has become medieval city walls. You do have to work on them a bit if you require a 3D effect (I didi not have much scope to do that as it was glued to the wall. Careful cuttuing off of the black verticle lines on the corners are well worth doing. Finally mixing artists paints to blend the window openings and others joints need doing too. jazz
Hi all. There has been a fair amount of progress at Makenbach recently. The scenery is well advanced, I still have a fair amout of small detailing to do, wire the lights and get the signals up andd running too. At least I am able to 'play trains' in a reasonable setting now. I thought y'all would like to see a photo shoot around Makenbach. Climbing the hill for an advantage point over the loco shed. Sneaking round the side of the shed for a peak. No one around so a quick look round. Looking over to the station. A busy time with lots of movements. Time for a cuppa in the station buttet. A visit to the town square Back along the tracks to the viaduct, looking back towards Makenbach. Aproaching the loco shed from the viaduct. A couple of locos making ready to depart. A final glimpse of a passing loco before heading home.
jazz
Hi all. I have been taking advantage of the magnificent weather of the last few days and made real progress on Makenbach. The layout is now fully operational. The fiddle yard has worked out really well (Photos will explain) I am very pleased with the Faller backdrops. Easy to use withg the recommended wallpaper paste. I did panic a little at all the bubbles as soon as I applied them to the backboards. However, in exceptionally warm garage, the bubbles quickly faded completely away. I still have to wire up the lights and get those singnals operational. (Putting them off as I hate working under the baseboards.) Here are the latest photos of the progress. Using paste board hinges on the flip up section across the rear garage door made for very easy use. They also do not need any supports.
Horsetan
Here are some suitable Bavarian wagons: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/transa1889/m.html?hash=item2ebf44d3c6&item=200777454534&pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2562
jazz
Hi all. I have been a bit quiet on the layout but I am so pleased with my latest purchases of four locos, a rake of coaches and various parcel & post office vans I would like to share them with you. The star purchase was the Trix diesel hydraulic, this a simply beutiful model, superb running and extremely quiet. Also amazingly heavy with the diecast body and all that weight inside. This makes the flywheel appreciated. Also I have replaced the 'out of period' hydraulic buffers in the terminus. Here are the photos. (Just noticed, it looks that woman is blowing off the other lady in black)
jazz
An update on the progress with the catenary installation and photos of the progress so far. There is tidying up to do and weathering of the catenary. I just love these early electrics and go very nicely with the early diesels. Photos so far. Sir Madog
Jazz, it may have escaped my understanding, but why did you choose that name? It is so typically un-German and definitively not Bavarian at all.
jazz
Hi Ulrich. I did ask for suggestions on the other German model railway forum. The suggestions were rather good, from very amusing to imaginative. I decided on Makenbach for these reasons. BACH (creek) there is a creek on the layout. MAKEN (KENMAson, my name). I guess it's not authentic and could easily be changed for one of the other suggestions. Regards Ken
Sir Madog
Ken, now I understand. It´s OK, as there is a personal touch to it, which the ignoramus in me did not catch. Layouts in Germany usually are not named - quite often, just the station names supplied with the kits are used (how boring)
jazz
Hi again. I have now changed the type font on the station name boards for the correct period font (thanks to the kind input and help with fonts from Sir Madog) I have also added a photo of the latest E-Lok to the stable. This is a beautiful model of a 1920's E-Lok by Lilliput. Very heavy with flywheel and runs superbly well. The new addition to the roster.
