plarailfan
I was looking on 'tinternet at bridges in Japan, when I happened to find this rather unusual structure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuyama_Bridge Apparently, it was replaced by seperate road and rail bridges, in the year 2000. (I've had to edit this, as the link didn't work first time round)
EddieB
Fascinating when trains and road vehicles share the same space, as opposed to the more common arrangement of keeping them separate. There's a list of combined road/rail bridges on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_road-rail_bridges Similar ones that come to mind are the one in Czech Republic at Bechyne (linked from above) and the new swing bridge connecting to the Baltic island of Usedom, Germany (http://www.acorp.uk.com/Assets/usedom.pdf). Glorious NSE
Interesting! There's a tunnel on the Alaska system which formerly had a road vehicle shuttle through it, but a recent article in Trains suggest it's now used as a road tunnel in between rail movements! RMweb Premium melmerby Posted March 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2012 There's a list of combined road/rail bridges on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia....ad-rail_bridges Most combined bridges have a separate road/rail deck either side by side or one above the other. The Connel bridge in Scotland had the rail track running alongside the road on the same deck. Keith
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted March 23, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 23, 2012 I recall driving over a few shared bridges when we went to New Zealand a few years ago, mostly the rail lines were disused but this one was still in dual operation - fascinating experience, slightly unnerving (although I've read only 1 train per day usually!) and quite a bumpy ride! Sadly it seems from the wiki link it got replaced in 2009 so that's another one removed from the shared deck list...
45669
Somewhat nearer to home, Pont Britannia (Britannia Bridge) in Porthmadog now carries Welsh Highland Railway trains as well as road traffic : http://www.flickr.com/photos/train-pix/5523649291/in/set-72157627326071690
Bristol_Rich
There is a shared road rail swing bridge on the Sharpness Docks complex (now disused). http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=sharpness+docks&hl=en&ll=51.722996,-2.474169&spn=0.001856,0.005845&client=safari&oe=UTF-8&hnear=The+Docks,+Sharpness,+Berkeley+GL13+9UD,+United+Kingdom&t=k&z=
