OFFTHE RAILS
I know that during WW2 the SR Schools class were painted plain black and from 1945 the standard livery reverted to malachite green as they were overhauled. My question is : In 1948 did any of the class remain in wartime black and receive the BRITISH RAILWAYS designation on the tender? If so which ones ? Stormbringer
Having had a look thru a couple of books, I think the answer is no. 4 loco's received BR lined black and BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender, 901,916,923, and 931 They may have gone straight from wartime black into BR black. RMweb Gold Graham_Muz Posted March 9, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 9, 2012 My records show that the following went from SR black to BR Lined black without receiving Malachite. 901, 908, 910, 915, 929, 931 and 935. I notice that this differs slightly from the information above as my records show 916 gaining malachite in Jan 46 and 923 in Jul 46, so will also check my other sources later this evening. OFFTHE RAILS
Thanks Stormbringer and Graham_Muz for your replies. I had trawled through many books and the web already so thanks for your confirmation. Ian
RMweb Gold Graham_Muz Posted March 11, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2012 Further to my Reply above I have checked a couple of sources and Derry makes a specific point about 916 not gaining Malachite and therefore going straight from SR black to BR lined black. This does contradict my own source and that of Winkworth although Derry might have obtained additional information from locomotive records that were not previsous publically avaiable hence his specifi reference.
