Taigatrommel
It's a sad testament to my stop-start modelling that I've been working on this model since before the present incarnation of RMWeb, but there you go. Anyway, there are a couple of outstanding puzzles for me regarding these units, as noted above. I'm not sure about the roof vent positions. I have some drawings a kind RMWebber sent me, and the vent positions on the TBFK don't seem to correspond at all to those on the CK which they were converted from- I would have assumed that they would have, at least on the passenger compartments. Without sharing copyrighted photographs/drawings I'm not sure how to clarify this, but to give the best explanation I can, the roof vents on a CK are centrally positioned over the compartments (sort of . : ' . : : : : : . ), but on the REP TBFK they are staggered, forming a zig-zag ( . ' . ' . ' . ' . ' . ' . ' . . )line down the roof. This is particularly odd as the TBuf's vents are very little changed from an RB. I haven't got a mk1 SO to compare to the DMS drawings and photographs. I really can't tell the positions from the photographs I have, so I have to trust the drawings really. Would the electrical boxes/connection at the ends have been the same as a VEP or CIG? If so, I can examine a prototype to get these details. If not, would anyone have some pointers about what the differences are? Thanks in anticipation.
Taigatrommel
I've had a tip off from a friend to look in Goulding's book (which I didn't know about!), so an order has been placed... I must resist the temptation to carry on building using guesswork!
RMweb Premium DIW Posted March 20, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 20, 2012 Hi Rich, Are any of the pictures from my build of any help? Finished version in this thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/2798-southern-pride-4rep-kit/ The latter part of the build in this blog attempt http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/251-southern-pride-4rep/ The start of the build in this thread from the previous version of RM Web (note that the previous forum archive appears and disappears according to the performance of the servers, so the link will work sometimes and return an error on other occasions) http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=36123&start=0&hilit=4REP Dave
Taigatrommel
Hi Dave, That is helpful, thank you. The vent positions on the TBFK correspond to the drawings I have, but I'll hold fire until my copy of Goulding arrives before fitting them- especially as I'm more and more convinced that first batch units had the passenger area vents removed from the TBuf. Page 48 of British Railway Southern Region Electrics in Colour (Oliver) strongly points to this with a view of 2001, although it also suggests I've removed a kitchen vent that I shouldn't have! Here's my progress as it stands, lots to do but plugging away a little a day. I've really learned that with projects like this I should draw up a work order before launching in, but as it's been evolutionary I can apply the lessons for future projects... mike hughes
might be of some help http://80srail.zenfolio.com/p693178668 Michael
Taigatrommel
Indeed they are helpful, I recognise some from when I started this project! I think they were on fotopic.
Guest Belgian
I have a vague recollection from my time as a traveller on these things that there were no standard positions or types of vents, these being dependent on which batch the original coaches came from. I think just the REP motor cars were standard, as they were new builds. JE
mike hughes
whether the roof vents in the BR diagrams match the photos that I don't know, but here's the link for them http://www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/BRBDocuments/Diagram_Book_210_for_Issue.pdf Michael
Taigatrommel
I have a vague recollection from my time as a traveller on these things that there were no standard positions or types of vents, these being dependent on which batch the original coaches came from. I think just the REP motor cars were standard, as they were new builds. JE That would make sense, and would certainly correspond to the (ex-Diag. 24 RB) TBufs which seem constant on retaining the three round vents over the kitchen, but with others remaining in different places on different coaches. robertcwp
Here are a couple of 4-REP photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/4335975488/in/set-72157629191176988/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/2448994092/in/set-72157629191176988/ Be wary of the Goulding book. There are lots of errors. Also don't forget that 3012-5 were different to the other 4-REP units, mainly on account of their buffet cars having been converted from RU rather than RB, but there may have been other differences too.
