Giles
I've just found this..... This loco is looking absolutely smashing - that lining looks bang on. Even preserved locos get wiped down every day with an oily rag, and that leaves a depth to the paint job, and residue in the corners. It may be worth playing with a test piece (if you can face it) and giving your test piece a wipe over with metalcote gunmetal, and seeing what in does (and wipe in back off, straight away.....) But really great job.......
talyllyn1
I've not been able to do much modelling this week. "Ordinary life" has been getting in the way! I have managed to make and fit the lamp brackets and train alarm jumper cable on the cab back. The junction box is a 12BA cheese head screw and washer, the cable is 10amp. fuse wire and the plug a small piece of scrap whitemetal, filed to shape. Rear lamp brackets and alarm cable by talyllyn1, on Flickr The sandbox lever, regulator rod and copper pipework were all added last week, at the the same time as the cab interior. The LNER A4 tri-tone chime whistle is from Hobbyhorse Developments. There is a lot more "plumbing" to add yet!
talyllyn1
In a nostalgic moment I decided to make a "wooden" cab floor. As a young volunteer cleaner, one of my shed duties was to lift the real thing up at the end of the working day and sweep all the coal slack out.It occured to me that I could stick a crew to it, and, because the cab roof is removable, the "unit" could be slotted in and out as requiredNo 6 CREW by talyllyn1, on FlickrThe figures are Phoenix ones from S & D Models. That fireman is a happy chap isn't he? The strange poses will make a bit more sense when I allow them on the footplate! The body has now been screwed to the chassis - hopefully for the last timeINJECTORS & STEAM PIPE by talyllyn1, on FlickrThe injectors and main steam pipe have been added, and nameplates from EDM Models,Still to be fitted are the sand pipes, works and rebuild plates and TR crests. There is also some detail painting to do and general "tidying up", but it's nearly done

A superb piece of work, and I expect it runs very well with all that whitemetal weight to load the motor. What decoder have you fitted? Haver you considered offering an article to a magazine? All the best, Dave.T

talyllyn1
Thank you all for your kind comments, they are much appreciated. The TR crests are in the post from Blackham Transfers, so it shoud be finished next week. There are plenty of errors, omissions and inaccuracies, but I think it captures the TR 1960s "look", which is what I was aiming for. The decoder is a TCS M1, which fits comfortably inside the boiler.Running in DC mode it is very smooth and slow running is excellent. I hooked it up to my laptop tonight with a Sprog DCC programmer and it is a bit erratic. I really need to give the wheels a good clean and try it again before I fiddle with the settings . I've used TCS decoders before without any problems, so it must be me! I'm very flattered that anyone should think it is good enough for a magazine article - I wouldn't know how to go about it. To be honest, I really had to pluck up the courage to put it on here - I didn't know how it would work out. I'd not done much work in brass before and very little soldering (none at all with whitemetal). Some people build complete layouts in the time it's taken, but I hope it has encouraged others to "push the boundaries" a bit. You can do anything if you want it enough and stick at it! talyllyn1
Thanks for the compliments John, much appreciated. Whats next? Well it's quite a list! I want to re-create as much as I can of the TR as it was around 1968. Things I have in the queue:- Wrightlines diesel No5 "Midlander". A Bullant unit is in transit from Hollywood Foundry for it. No 2 Dolgoch - Wrightlines kit. I'm hoping to fit DCC sound. There are a lot of detail changes needed. No 1 Talyllyn - Peco/Branchlines. Will be modified to correct scale length for the loco as it was after rebuilding in 1958. No 4 Edward Thomas. I have a 2nd hand incomplete Wrightlines kit - trying to get the missing bits at the moment. Will need to be modified to 60s' condition (possibly with the Giesl Ejector - ugh!). Wrightlines kits for 2 Brown Marshallls 4-wheel coaches and 2 Glyn Valley coaches. Worsley etches for Corris coach and TR 4-wheeler No3. 10 Wrightlines TR open and flat wagon kits. Worsley etches for bogie coaches 9 &10 on order. I also want to scratch build the Corris and TR brake vans, the "tea van" (No7) and a couple of semi-open 4 wheelers. Well you did ask! Should keep me occupied for a few years When Douglas is finished I'll be doing one of the Brown Marshalls 4 wheelers, as I need to see how tight a curve I can use with sprung buffers and screw link couplings. I've a feeling i might have to rethink that one. Having done that I can start to plan a layout. Must finish No 6 first though. The bunker was filled with coal about an hour ago, so "steam up" can't be far away! I've been asked to put future stuff on NGRM-online rather than here. I must admit I don't know what to do? Cheers Dave
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted September 5, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2012 I've been asked to put future stuff on NGRM-online rather than here. I must admit I don't know what to do? Do both. I look at both forums daily and don't mind seeing good modelling twice - and I'm sure that same goes for many others as you will see several user names repeated in both. Have a look at David Taylor's topics for example which will be found on both forums - you only have to type it once and then paste it into the other - although handling photos may be a bit different . . . . . . . . None of it is mutually exclusive. On the NGRM Forum you are discussing with fellow narrow gauge modellers/enthusiasts, while on here you are "spreading the word" a bit more. There's quite a few people on both, and most modellers have wider interests than just their own specialism. Publish I say! Cheers, Dave.
mjcampbell
That sounds like a great plan! I tend to be on NGRM more than here, but as Mike and Dave have said there will be different interest on each. If you upload pictures to Flikr or similar you can post them on both forums with minimal extra effort.
talyllyn1
The works and rebuild plates have arrived from Narrow Planet, and the TR crests from Blackham Transfers, so they've been fitted 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr I find it hard to decide when any project is "finished", but the more I fiddle with this, the more I end up damaging the paintwork, so I guess it's "done"! 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr Just waiting for a "No 6" to arrive from Blackham to go on the bufferbeam, but the crew can climb aboard now 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr There's always something that needs improving - that cab roof needs another "tweak" to sit properly! 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr 0-16.5 TR No6 Douglas by talyllyn1, on Flickr No 6 always seems to have an LNER-pattern lamp. I've glued a small piece of brass U section to the back of the Springside lamp so that it sits properly on the brackets, and can be swapped end-to-end. It does look a bit overscale to me though
Sir Madog
How on earth did you do this fantastic paint job? I am thinking of building a TR "Dolgoch", but wonder how to do the paint job with the black "background", the coloured "inlays" and lining.
talyllyn1
The painting and lining is described in post #24 of this topic. If you want to do Dolgoch in the later light green or the current Crimson Lake liveries, Fox do the .5mm lining in Pale Straw or Cream http://www.fox-transfers.co.uk/products.cgi?categoryid=445&ordernumber=236932298941 Dolgoch is on my "to do" list, after a couple of coaches and diesel No5 Midlander. talyllyn1
Just a minor update. I've fitted replacement nameplates with the correct letter style and slightly larger works and rebuild plates, all custom made by Steve of Narrow Planet. New Narrow Planet Plates by talyllyn1, on Flickr I think they make a big difference. Steve has produced all the name, works and rebuild plates for me as fitted to the TR locos running in 1968. It has involved a fair bit of detective work as some of these haven't been on the locos for several decades! I have no connection to Steve other than being a very satisfied customer. We have never met or spoken - all the communication has been by email. His prompt replies and keenness to "get it right" have been exemplary - I can't speak highly enough about the service he provides
talyllyn1
I've not posted on here for some time, but Douglas now has a couple of "stable mates". talyllyn1
Thank you Giles - praise indeed from one of the most talented NG modellers around! I intended to make myself known at Burton, but your End of The Line was deservedly surrounded with admirers every time I went past, and I was on a "mission" to button-hole one or two non-delivering "suppliers". Here's to next time! Cheers Dave
hartleymartin
So when can we commission you to build more Douglas models for us?
talyllyn1
Commission? I'm flattered Martin, but I don't think I could face doing another Douglas, unless it was to correct the errors I made with the first one. Meanwhile, the struggle continues to produce a half-decent No 1 Talyllyn on NGRMonline. Cheers Dave
