RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted July 1, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1, 2012 It appears as if the O.H.L has come down upon the roof. ... and has remained rather on the live side - apparently somebody does not have very sensitive circuit breakers (maybe they don't have any circuit breakers at all?) Edwin_m
I've seen this posted before and it's somewhere round Johannesburg (confirmed via Google image search) where the suburban lines are at 3000VDC. It may be an example of the difficulty of protecting against faults on relatively low voltages, where the fault current may not be much different from the maximum current consumption if several trains happen to be accelerating at the same time. Looking back through the accident reports from the UK there have been several serious fires on DC systems where a short circuit has been allowed to continue for some time. Yes Eddie - some time back and again it involved a bit of a guess the country competition until South Africa was pinpointed as the, hmm, 'culprit'. I seem to recall, possibly elsewhere, that someone online mentioned something about some 'age related' problems on a suburban ohle system somewhere in SA and taht this sort of thing was not a solitary incident in that area.
