Sorry, it wasn't my intention to have this as a mystery location, but as has been said, it's Scotch Dyke. The ground frame controlled the crossing gate to Kirkandrews Church from the A7 road just visible to the extreme left.

See the screen-shot (courtesy of Bing maps).

I can think of one other ground frame on the Waverley Route remaining in recent years; that for Lochpark works just to the south of Hawick - it was removed in 1967, I think. ... But there must have been others for some of the old sidings, e.g. Standhill, Darnick &c.

[edit] ... and the ground frame which replaced Kelso Junction box for the last years of the Kelso freight branch.

Thanks for that :D

So it sounds like, essentially, a gate box - I assume the cabinet housed repater instruments? I'm assuming it wasn't manned and only used as required - my first job on the operations side of the railway was essentially like that but with a roof and heating!

A discussion over on the Signalbox website has these rather nice photos of Riccarton South 'box, complete with its vertical diagram:

Hi Kingfisher 24

I have pictures and SB diagrams of this box which I'm happy to let you have if you'll just send me an e-mail address.

Sorry, a bit off-topic, but a little piece of history.

One very happy man who used to work Stow box above and was on duty at Hawick South on 5 January 1969.

Jimmy was scheduled to be on duty for the final working, but the late Gordon Hall swapped shifts with Jimmy so that Gordon could signal the last train through Hawick.

I would be extremely interested to pore over that and build up the definitive picture of the Final Fortnight, especially as so many of the daylight workings at least are recorded for posterity on Railscot.

I'll pass you on his details via PM.

Thanks for sharing that - absolutely fascinating and what a survivor, I had no idea!

Interestingly, the panel has been modified to reflect track alterations.  Seemingly gone are the up dock (where we have seen a shivering Peak and passing A3 back in the snows of '63), the gasworks spur and the up sidings other than the loop.  It seems that this had been modified to be a recessing siding rather than the facing loop of its fifties heyday.  Hawick North had been abolished by then and the trackwork out past Burnfoot much simplified for the route's twilight years.

Hi all, new to this forum and am researching to model the Lauder light, Fountainhall to Lauder.  From what I have found out, Fountainhall had 3 signalboxes in total.  I have details of the one built for the opening of the Lauder Light, and the rebuilt one in the 1950s, but can anybody help with pictures of the original box on the Edinburgh side of the level crossing?  I have bought books and done hours of on-line research, but so far drawn a blank - can anyone please help?

Not too sure about the signal boxes, but there are a few Lauder Light Railway plans available from the NRS ... I've done a catalogue search and your best bet is from item 61 onwards, as per the following link. Apologies if you've already been down this avenue of online research.
