Going through the Daleks at Fiddlers Ferry on the 47`s slow-speed controller, one could feel the jolt/clunk (even up-front on the footplate) of the HAA doors being tripped; right-back to the final wagon......even as young as I was at the time: I was struck by the impressive forces at work in the unloading operations.

If I recall correctly: in the mid/late 70`s, we often went out L.E from Birkenhead to Bold, Agecroft and Bickershaw Collieries to collect loaded MGR`s.......there was another large-mine we went to in Lancs., but I can`t remember its name (?).

Parkside ?

Thank you, Dave...that was the one!

Just had a Google and that site`s all long-gone, along with the others in and around Lancs........and we`re importing Australian, Chinese and Polish coal for Fiddlers Ferry now; it`s a mad-world!

In earlier years a propelling move at Fiddlers Ferry required a fleet of CAR brake vans, such as http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e2001e129 http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e28d6b94b http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e2d8aaa73 http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e2c0ec4bc I don't know when this finished, before 1993.

The yellow was for the Coal sector livery introduced in the summer of 1988 http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brhaapost80/e2fb4e642

Some of the photographs show a painted out diamond. This was the Currock wagon works "fox" or Barry wagon works "ship".

Please recall that the HMRS has published a book about MGR including how they were worked http://www.hmrs.org.uk/books/bookdetails.php?bookid=1036

Was that the derailment that took out the signalling on the Southport line and also a lot of parked cars?

T'was indeed. July 1998 I think it was. Certainly around the same time as the derailment of a coal train at Dent, and the derailment of a steel train near Smethwick.

I shot this video some year back and put it on youtube...

Most of my video's get around a hundred views but for some reason this one's got approaching 31000.

Thanks for posting that....I have never seen this process in action before.

Is it really 30 years ago when these photos of MGR trains were taken?

The first shows a Cl.47 on the coal loop at Ratcliffe - note the coal stockpile in possible anticipation of the Miner's Strike a year later. The second picture, on a typical dull day at Toton, sees a Cl.56 heading down from the High Level Goods lines.

Just everyday sights gone forever.
